Hello there! This pic is extremely important to me and I thought I'd write a critique for you! But before I get into it, I'd like to say a quick thing. You continue to surprise me with your art. Really, you do. I think so much of the art of seen from you is quite similar in nature, a sort of portrait or bust of a single character with a brilliant light shining on them, most likely outdoors. And you do great with those. But then you kick it up several notches by doing pieces like this where everything I expect from you is thrown out the window! Now, ahem, on to the actual critique XDDD
So immediately the colors are overflowing with this piece, which is necessary because of the subject matter of it. So nicely done there. The composition also works in conjunction with the colors, mostly yellow in the low center while the predominate colors at the top are purple and orange-ish brown. I like that, it's a simple but effective approach to good composition. The colors also flow with the gesture of Silver's quills and sort of with Blaze's arm and hair. I love that the most about the colors, as it really feels like Silver and Blaze are IN this inferno and the struggle to hold on to each other is desperate and powerful.
Aa far as my gripes with the color (which trust me, I have very few), I find myself missing your trademark extreme lighting! In nearly every pic you have, you handle the light very carefully to get the maximum emotional effect out of the piece. But here I don't really see that, it looks simplified and I think this could only benefit from that careful treatment of the light. Not to say that there isn't some great light here (I mean there's a raging inferno as the set piece XDDD), but I would have liked to see just a bit more nuance to it. ^v^

As far as the characters, I adore Silver's facial expression and his clutching embrace on Blaze. It's breathtaking and striking, he wants so badly to never let her go now that he's got her again. It's so powerful and that's why I couldn't bring myself to fave this right away, I really liked seeing it in my messages everyday! XDDD If I faved it as soon as I saw it, I wouldn't be able to see it quite as readily, so I avoided it until today. ^^U But truly, that's my favorite part about this piece, Silver's face conveying everything we need to know about the situation instantly. a.deviantart.net/avatars/i/l/i… " alt=" " title="iloveyouplz" />
Conversely, Blaze doesn't read quite as strongly. And I understand, her face isn't shown so of course there won't be an equal emotional response from the audience because of her. But, I will say that seeing her face doesn't necessarily mean that it's impossible to feel a strong emotion from her clearly! There's a few small tweaks you could do to make her 10 times more expressive! For example: her hand could be cupping the back of Silver's head, squeezing his face a bit with her arm. Or you could have leaned her body back so that it looks like she collided with Silver and it was a mutual desperate search for them in this blazing fire (pun not intended XDDD). So that's all I wanted to say about her, she's fine, but she could have been great with just a few minor adjustments. :3

The background is perfect, I wouldn't change a thing and everything else that I haven't covered is fine the way it is. Conceptually, this was destined to be great. I mean, Silver getting Blaze back from the fiery prison she put herself in, proving that their friendship is not something he's willing to sacrifice, not even for the world, is incredible. Truly, this is a piece that will stick with me for a long time. This is a totally breathtaking and deep drawing of Silver and Blaze hugging, with his expression of despair! I really am amazed with the flames surrounding them! Very effective!
