Description Came across this music video, Muse - Uprising , while browsing youtube and I liked the lighting in it and felt compelled to paint it :3 I dont experiment much with different kinds of lighting, so this was good practice. I loooovvee hard lighting that makes the face all dark and contrasty. I like that the eyes are barely visible. It adds a sense of mysteriousness :]

Im happy with how it came out. Its not perfect and I can see mistakes, but I'm glad to know that I can do these kinds of things. Its fun spotting out the subtle colors that you wouldnt think to see and seeing how colors work next to each other, like the warmer tones that appear yellow in the background are actually closer to magenta.

I'll probably do more of these paintings from music videos I find. It was done quite fast and it was really good practice.

(Done in Paint tool SAI)

the colors are awesome! i'm actually trying to draw him and for be more specific, i'm using a brush like this (i'm using a brush called "spray") and everything was fine 'till i start drawing the face, the colors of the human skin are like a big problem for me.... i never had problems with the colors untill i started to practice drawing humans.... i think i really need help with that O^O....

good style by the way! i like the difference between the style of the face and the style of the hair!

(and i think that i can see his left eye XD!)

Probably trying to discover how to render the hair, but after getting the hang of it, it was actually pretty easy :] the power of practice!

For doing faceshots from music videos, I immediately thought of Lady Gaga's Judas, where she has her face so close to the camera with all that elaborate make-up on. That would definitely be fun to try to color correctly!

Awesome work, Tavi. (Gotta love Muse)
Never know where to start with anything painterly. My brain gets muddles before I get anywhere.

Find a photo with good lighting and start trying to copy it :] Thats what I had to do for my beginning school assignments. After you master it, you can start painting whatever you like with it looking right (while still using reference of course)

Sweet! For painting, would it be better suited if you painted in light or darks first?

It depends. For this one, I started off the dark background base, then sketched the face in a slightly lighter shade pencil. Then I painted underneath that pencil layer, adding on lighter shades, and eventually removed the pencil layer. Then I just fleshed out the details from there :]

Short answer: I painted with darks first, then gradually went lighter.
