This enormous and heavy revolver are used by Ignus forces inside starships and space stations. Its 12x30mm ammo have special cases with oxygen trapped inside, to allow the gun to fire even in the vaccum of space.

The drum have space for 12 bullets, and it can be exchanged, together with the barrel to allow bigger caliber ammo to be used.

Hi!.

Two thoughts.

1) Have you seen the 'Lemat Revolver' [link]

2) Any fire arm will work in space. The propellant charge has every thing it already needs inside the cylinder to fire. Other problems are thermal stresses due to the instances of being in a vacuum. (I.E. space is both cold and hot due to the ay heat is transferred etc)

3) Have you perhaps though of having the barrel 'under-slung' much like the Mateba series? [link] And this 8 (Eight) round version [link]

Much cheers to you and yours.

Actually...a shot-gun using a revolver style magazine system.

But, yeah, cut own it is one scary looking item. Heck, even still full sized it looks beautiful.

Much cheers to you and yours.

If each of those slots in the drum is for a 12mm bullet, this gun would be absolutely huge. The drum is probably going to be 7-8cm across.
Then again, if it's 12x30mm, then its going to be slightly less powerful than .50AE

Also, guns will work fine in vacuum, because modern propellants already carry oxidisers, which allow combustion to occur. It won't be as clean as in air due to much reduced oxygen, but the weapon would indeed fire, with reduced power. Imagine running a car at high altitude, how its power will be strangled due to lack of air.
If you were using a direct impingement weapon like the AR-15, the incomplete combustion would jam it very quickly.

Wow! Quite cool, didn't knew about this modern ammo... I heard that AK series can be fired underwater, maybe its the same principle as the vacuum firing guns

The idea for 12 shots came from guns like these [link] , quite big but more bullets before reloading, and since it is made mostly for fights in zero or reduced gravity, weight is not so important...

parakitteh In reply to orcbruto [2012-03-27 17:07:59 +0000 UTC]

Well, again, just about all guns can fire underwater, but water is so dense (more than 800 times so as water), so the bullets are rapidly decelerated by the massive resistance water puts on them, making them useless after anything more than a few feet.

The AK variant you refer to requires special ammunition, and a special weapon. It has dual chambering, and uses ammunition known as 5.66x39mm for underwater use and then the magazine is changed to conventional 5.45x39mm for land use. It's intended as a defence weapon for Frogmen (Navy Combat Divers).

It's called the APS Ambphibious Rifle ([link] - note the incredible length of the bullets). I believe the Russians have developed a new variant that uses bullets of a more sane length, but I can't recall its name.

Just to let you know, most cartridges (or anything that explodes for that matter,) have air trapped in them anyway. The only time with conventional weapons where this is not the case is with thermobaric weapons.

That being said, this revolver looks absolutely kickin'.

I wasn't sure if firearms could fire in space, since NASA developed some vacuum firing pistols in 1960's for the Apollo's crew in case they meet some cosmonauts in the moon

You don't need oxygen for gunpowder to fire. Explosives always contain their own oxidizer, that's how they can burn fast enough to explode in the first place.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

orcbruto In reply to Nullcast [2012-03-26 12:20:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, but I guess an explosion without oxygen wouldn't be so powerful or maybe would not expand enough to make the gun function at its best...

Nullcast In reply to orcbruto [2012-03-26 15:52:24 +0000 UTC]

You'd probably get the same effect from nonreactive nitrogen and have ammo that keeps better.

in some sort of pocket, just underneath the barrel. the idea is a multi-stage switchblade sword, so it can get quite long

Modern firearms will fire in vacuum just fine, and in fact will be more powerful then in atmosphere due to lack of air resistance.

A .12 cartridge? HMR .17 ammo will barely kill varmints, let alone people.

A revolver cylinder requires horizontal locking slots for the mechanism to rotate it.

orcbruto In reply to ScrewfaceRomeo [2012-03-23 13:58:15 +0000 UTC]

I heard NASA had to develop a special pistol that could fire in vacuum and that the first Apollo missions carried this guns in case they run into russian cosmonauts in the moon... I really don't know how modern firearms would behave in space...

My bad, its not .12, its 12x30mm... I will fix that in the description...

And the locking is inside the barrel, when the back hole connects with the pole in the back part, it have like a eight-arm cross in the tip to move the drum. I saw that in a plastic revolver that shoots blanks and made it in the model, but the position don't let you see it...

I know that they suspected that it wouldn't work, but tests proved that it worked even better then on Earth, I know the cosmonauts carried a three barrled combination rifle/shotgun in case of space bears.

That size of bullet would not fit in that cylinder unless the weapon was sized for a giant.

There's a reason that system is used on blank guns and little bitch guns: it can't stand up to the full recoil of a big revolver.

Hm... As far as I remember, this carbines were created for survival purpose. In case of landing in far-from-civilisation regions.

Kinetic weapon is rather bad choice in space. Newton's Third Law. Don't know about US, but in USSR were developed laser pistol and laser revolver - special for cosmonauts.
