Description asked for a MK2 version of my Obliterator gun [link] , so, here it is!

The Obliterator Gun (or technically MLIPCC MK 2, Military Laser Induced Plasma Channel Cannon MarK 2) is a huge bazooka-like device capable of emitting powerful plasma discharges, similar to a natural ball lightning in both power and appearance.

Here is how it works: The Obliterator uses three powerful batteries to produce high energy lasers. In a planetary atmosphere this lasers will overheat the gases and form a tunnel of plasma (high energy ionized gas). A powerful electromagnet is turned on a millisecond after the plasma tunnel was formed, impulsing the high energy matter to the target. The lack of other matter inside the laser tunnel makes the plasma travel in high speeds (220,000 km/h (140,000 mph)), hitting the target as a contained lightning, melting materials (it reaches 30,000 °C (54,000 °F)) and delivering 16 millions volts of electricity, capable to burn all the crew and circuits of a vehicle.

Because of the overheating, it also have a shoulder-mounted liquid nitrogen tank, and several tubes to cool the weapon after and during each shot.

The gun range is limited only by the density of the atmospheric gases. In good conditions (no clouds, no mist or smoke) it can hit a spaceship or a satellite in orbit, in bad conditions the gun range falls for some kilometers, but delivers a more potent blast (more gases to ionize in the laser tunnel).

It can work in vacuum conditions, but them it would use the nitrogen stored in the cooling tanks as ammunition, overheating it inside the laser tunnel.

In atmospheric conditions it can be fired several hundred times, and despite the silence, it's easy to detect the shooter because of the light and nitric acid gases it release (and smell of ozone). In vacuum it can be fired about 100 times before it needs to refill the liquid nitrogen tank.

In addition to the original Obliterator, the MK2 have the cooling system and engines encased in a resistant carbon fiber hull, making it more durable and protecting it from water, sand and other materials.

Modeled in Sketchup, rendered in Twilight, a touch of Photoshop. Information researched in Wikipedia (Plasma, Electrolaser, Plasma Weapon, Lightning, Ball Lightning...)

And yes, US army and Boeing are researching to develop a weapon just like that. By now they can delivers just enough plasma energy to incapacitate a target, like a taser delivered by laser tunnels... at least according to Wikipedia

You know, the kinds of graphics you can produce in Google Sketchup almost reminds me of old-school 3D renderings from the early-mid 90s, in programs such as Bryce 3D.

Oh yes! I like Sketchup because its quite simple to use, don't require lots of tools and tedious mesh modeling, but its quite ugly graphics unless you have a good render plug-in

Yeah I myself have 3DS Max 2011, which you can download for free if you're a student, but I've never used it that much at all in the past year or so since I downloaded it. That said, I had an awesome dream about a month ago that I made a 3D model of one of my guns, which somehow made me extremely famous, and that dream has inspired me to possibly take up 3D modeling again in the near future.

Follow your dreams! Who knows if tomorrow you will be designing guns for Colt or other industry?

Heh, I doubt Colt or any real gun company would have any interest in my guns, because they'd be too expensive to produce, they rely on technology that hasn't been invented yet (or at least not on such small a scale) and in general it would be impossible to build my guns that way in present times, at least not for mass production. Maybe one or two one-of-a-kind prototypes could be built in labs, but chances are they'd be so massive they wouldn't even look like my guns anymore, and they'd be a hell of a lot less efficient, since again, we're dealing with present-day technology here.

However, my guns would be great in a futuristic first-person shooter like Halo, or something similar.

Great looking but I have a question. I see the shoulder rest but looking at the trigger I don't see how someone could comfortably stabilize the weapon and fire it. How is it suppose to be held? is there some kind of stock that pops out?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

orcbruto In reply to shaktipat [2011-11-28 11:36:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, the "shoulder rest" goes over the shoulder, like an bazooka, the right hand holds the grip and trigger, and the left hand can help to stabilize it holding under the barrel. Its best used with the bipod (that can be unfolded) for best stability

Oh yes! The original is more "prototype" kind, a more "Fallout" design with lots of exposed wires and engines

I really like that look, but its not practical in the battlefield
