Description
A selection of Venetian coins.
From left to right:
Scudo, 8 lire (silver): This silver coin seems to have it's front side facing the viewer. The coin's front side depicts Saint Mark seated on a throne handing the banner to a genuflected doge of Venice.
Scudo (silver): This silver coin seems to have it's reverse side facing the viewer. The coin's reverse side depicts a lion on a shield decorated with foliage.
Zecchino with Turkish countermark (gold): This gold coin is the smallest one of the bunch. Apparently the coin's front side depicts Saint Mark standing and handing the banner to a genuflected doge, with a Turkish countermark behind the doge. Meanwhile the reverse side depicts Christ the Redeemer blessing in a halo of stars.
But due to the design of the coin and it's small size, I can't say which side of the coin is facing towards the viewer.
Taler for the East, 12 zecchini (gold): This gold coin seems to have it's front side facing the viewer. The coin's front side depicts a lion holding it's left front paw on an open book and resting on a shelf bearing the inscription: A.S; in exergue (flower).
Ducat (silver): This silver coin seems to have it's reverse side facing the viewer. The coin's reverse side depicts the winged lion of St Mark in the traditional manner, with it's hind legs on the sea and forepaws on the earth.
