Description

Venice has a long history of warfare and bloodshed with it's greatest rival, Ottoman Empire, over the control of the seas.

However, despite the wars, there were also periods of intense trade, diplomatic activity and cultural exchange.

This Turkish shield made of wood, leather, metal and textiles is dated to the first half of the 17th century. Venetian artisans would reproduce Eastern motifs in their works, such as the decorations on this shield. Meanwhile Venetian houses were adorned with silk or woollen carpets from Anatolia, while the members of the nobility wore clothing inspired by the East.
