The guilds were various types of citizen associations of different arts and trades which promoted and safeguarded the interests connected with a certain artisanal, artistic or commercial activity.
This voting urn was specifically used to elect the members of the Caulkers' Guild. The caulkers were workers who specialized in waterproofing the hulls of ships and boats by sealing the planking joints with tow and warm pitch - a critical phase in shipbuilding.
