Description
This is not a huge bandwagon from what I have seen but here you peeps go anyhow. I basically just drew this guy, an OC of mine from earlier one and one of my favorites, as a merman. I did redesign his face and body a little beyond just the lower body becoming a fishtail, as well as giving him an outfit that suits him more. I also tried something new with the shading and tried to have lighting emanate from a single point as opposed to the mess you see in some other pieces. Here is the original piece featuring JV from before I knew how to shade:

This artwork, while the colors are bright and makes the piece that much more noticeable, could use a couple of improvements. First concern is with the use of shading. The shading seems to be a bit awkward and doesn't blend too well with the rest of the image. I suggest trying to shade every aspect of the picture in a sketch, try to see where the light is then shade the areas that are darker than the rest. (I've been to many art classes over the years and they made me do the same excersizes. They actually do help when I draw.) I have a feeling that you're starting out in type of artwork, but with some more practice you'll improve greatly. Keep up the good work! Hope this critique helps.

Hello there!
Critiques:
The first thing u see us the body. it is very wide, a little too wide. Maybe thin it out.
The hair looks a little odd. It has spikes facing in weird directions. one of the spikes is pointing upwards, which throws off the design of the character. Maybe fix that?
The placement of the goggles is odd. It appears as if the goggles are there to cover the eyes, but with this drawing, it appears that the eyes are on the forehead, and that the forehead is very small. You should try to look at human anatomy references when drawing a face, as faces can be hard.
The design lacks some shading in a few places, such as where the shirt overlaps the tail of the merman.
The simplistic design is a little odd with the shading. Mermen and Mermaids tend to have scales on their tails, and maybe you can add a design onto the shirt.I suggest adding some detail.
Things I liked:
I liked the design! Most mermen art is normally shirtless, with there eyes showing, but you mixed it up a little!
The colors are good! They don't seem to clash with each other.
The linework is clean. good job!
Overall:
You are obviously a good artist who is still developing, and you're producing good art. but, all art can use some touch ups, and that apples for you as well. overall, this is good, but lacking in a few places.
Thanks for listening!

Thank you. I agree a lot with a lot of your points. Admittedly, my art is a bit simpler in detail as I am not too sure how to do more detailed pieces well. I will hopefully get there though. Also, I was not sure if I should include goggles even or where I would include them. The spikes from the hair are actually part of Jovani's design. I was not too sure how to implement them but they are there for a reason. In any case, than you for your critique. I really appreciate it.

This is great! The only things you can change a little is to make the lines a bit darker so that they stick out and become a bit more visible, and also try to make the shading less smudgy. I would recomend trying out different styles of shading a stick with what you feel comfortable with.

That is what I am doing now. This was a fun experiment with shading but I admit that this is far from my favorite. Thank you for your feedback!

As much as I would love to, I don't know if my schedule or wrist would allow it. Still an awesome idea if I could though.
