Description
For the C.O.W (creature of the week) on conceptart. The task was to draw a creature for the famous wizard Merlin.
Name: Scath
Information for the creature: This little creature is especially useful for studies late at night. It can glow much brighter than a normal candle, if itβs needed (which is a big reduction of the danger of burning valuable books and notices, because of an accident with a candle). Beside this prized little ability, it is also very intelligent and can help its master to work out plans. The wings are far too small to fly around, but they can also turn into bright glowing parts- it can fly nonetheless, but it would need the help of magic.

Yeah- that's why I think I should start with the background- this way I would be forced to draw something better before I can go over with drawing the creature- and the lighting would be probably also a little bit more easy

Yup, I also like this one the most Hehe, if I hadn't found COW, I probably would never have created something like him... I'm still amazed that I managed to draw him in just one week

Does the Scath have two heads or a false head to confuse predators/catch prey?

OrmIrian In reply to Mike-the-dabbler [2010-03-04 16:15:58 +0000 UTC]
It has indeed two heads- both have a free will on their own, but usually they will work together. One would be probably specialised on movements and the other one would more handle the thinking and talking- after all, it's Merlin's Familiar which needs to be a little bit more intelligent than normal pets would be

Wow, this is unbelievable!
The details are stunning, and I love the design of the creature (dragon?)-- it's very unique!
You did an excellent job making the spines on it's back look like they're really glowing-- something I certainly can't do to save my life XD

Thank you so much!
Well, I tried to draw something aside of dragon once again, but I have to agree: It still have some dragonish features- probably I should have left away the little green wings..
The glowing was indeed very tricky- at first I wanted the green glowing be the only lightsource in the picture, but I guess it would have been far to dark if it would be really the only lightsource..

Hugely talented artist, really fantastic.
I cannot offer much in the way of critique, but I can say that the only problem I see with this masterpiece is that the pages of the book are quite low detail, which looks strange in comparison to the dragon - the brush strokes are really conspicuous on them.
But yeah, brilliant

Yeah, I know the book is kinda undetailed, but I had only one week time to finish this picture and focused on finishing the creature more than on the background (since the concept of the creature is more important for this kind of competition)- thanks for pointing it out anyway!

You are welcome (and thanks for the favourite

And I understand, I just tried to think of something that could have been improved (that was the only thing I could think of)
Thanks,

Light-Schizophrenia In reply to ??? [2009-12-03 01:01:30 +0000 UTC]
freaking cool
what makes it interesting is the fact that you took a very biological, looking and science fictionish look for the creature
instead of a tipycal fantasy looking beasty

Quite a strange dragon creature indeed! I like how you did it's purple eyes, they look like gems.
It has part centipede on its other head? quite an interesting mix! well drawn too, plenty of details.

OrmIrian In reply to Lee99 [2009-11-24 14:14:18 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, actually I have tried not to draw a dragon, but I guess there are still some similarities- I think the next time I won't draw any wings
I also like how the eyes turned out- normally eyes are really difficult, but I think I found a new method to draw them
Well, yeah- it could be a part of a centipede there! Hehe, I have give my best to make it look cool, but still doubt I will have any chances at this contest-thingie.. Still, I do this for the training and for the fun, not for winning it.
I actually plan to participate the C.O.W (creature of the week) on conceptart more often in the future.
