I think you've captured the character quite well. You're not really missing out by not reading the book either, personally I think it's fairly weak compared to some of his other work (still a lot better than most modern writers though), but I'd definitely recommend Blood Meridian and the Borders Trilogy.

Very interesting. I'll confess I avoid him, I've issues enough. When I want that much pain I'll catch up on what's going on in the world....

(Trivia for you, apparently the problem with thalidomide is that in nature the molecule forms a turn in only one direction, when manmade it ends up forming half that way and half its mirror image, that's what messes up the cell formation.)

I read The Road in the middle of summer, mostly outside on a sunny lawn, and it still felt like it was dark and cold and rainy. His writing is beautiful, but I don't blame you for avoiding him. I've been putting off reading Blood Meridian for about three years now, after first checking it out, staring at it, and then deciding that I didn't need to deal with it at that particular juncture or anytime soon.

That's interesting. I learned about thalidomide from a horribly depressing Sylvia Plath poem but only ever looking into what it did to the body, not so much why it did it.

Cormac McCarthy makes me feel like I'm reading sadness syrup. I loved The Road, but oh man is his work ever bleak.

I've never seen that movie, though, I should get to it sometime.

I've only read The Road and Outer Dark and they took me longer to get through than any couple hundred page book ever should. He just makes me feel so . . . not okay.
