A few notes on construction:
The tunic was made from satin back crepe (not my favourite fabric to work with). The pattern started life as a commercial pattern for a crossover type top which I then modified to cross it in the opposite direction, remove the big bow tie thing, lengthened the skirt section and added the band along the bottom of the skirt. The decorative "waves" on the corners of the skirt (which you can't see in this shot) were appliqued using iron on fusing then hand stitched.
An additional waistband was made out of leftover whit satin.

The gloves were custom made with a polyester knit fabric using some tutorials from here [link] and modified to my needs.

The water bags were made with upholstery faux suede in two browns a zip was included in the construction so that my "water" poi could be stored in them as well as my phone camera and occasionally chocolate. The bands were made with pleather, the attachment of which nearly killed my poor little sewing machine.

The boots came from the wonderful world of ebay but the armour was made by me using fibreglass cast material (as in for broken legs) with a huge amount of help from I added some duct tape to the sharp edges for protection then gave the fibreglass a few coats of lacquer to smooth it out a bit.
Then bands of elastic were stitched onto the arm, leg and foot pieces (by hand, through the fibreglass, phew my poor fingers!). They were then covered in a metallic contact usually used for covering kitchen fittings to make them look stainless steel. The hand pieces were stitched directly on to the gloves and round mother-of pearl discs were glued to the leg pieces.

The necklace was made from sculpey (two tones blended) and silvered and laquered. The hair loopy beads were also made from sculpey.

The wig was a good quality kanekalon wig from ebay. I created the bun by taking a cardboard tube from inside a bandage, filling it with said bandage then taking some strands of hair cut from underneath the wig and glueing them to the ends of the tube. I then styled the wig in a half ponytail and wrapped the ponytail around the tube and hot glued it in place. (I found the instructions on how to do this on someone elses DA account but I can't remember who right now).

That's all I can think of, if you have any questions just ask me.

xx

I THOUGHT THAT WAS YOUR REAL HAIR. (Oh, this is Azula from Saturday at Supanova) That wig is incredible. The entire time I was like, "Geez I wish I had nice hair like that." I still can't believe it. Do you remember who on ebay you bought it from?

Ufgh you made your own gloves! That is amazing. I tried it once and swore never again. Props to you.

Also, your armor was super impressive. Just hearing the creation process is even more amazing. Where did you get the fibreglass? And the metallic contact? I need to try this now.

I looked into buying some pois for Azula and then I realized how expensive they are... They photographed SO well though, totally worth it. You really looked like a Waterbender!

Also, you basically WERE Katara. I felt like I was actually talking to her. So awesome!! I hope you get lots of recognition for this cosplay!!

We also got spiral poi and glow poi for fun. When I cosplay Azula, I mainly use the glow poi - [link] - and cover them in blue fabric to look like flames (there will be photos later). Spiral poi [link] forever-girl and I use for fun and practice. I highly recommend starting with the spirals (well, actually I recommend starting with socks, but then for display use spirals).

Haha! That's great, maybe I shouldn't have said anything
It's definitely worth paying a little more for your wigs, I got mine from a store called Playwithhair [link] they're located in Perth.

Yes making gloves is not an experience I want to repeat soon, I can't count how many times I unpicked and resewed them.

The fiberglass casting tape I actually bought through my work (I'm a vet) but you may be able to get some off ebay or if you've got any friends who are medically inclined they may be able to get some. The metallic contact can be bought off ebay here: [link]

I love my veil poi, They are so much fun to spin. They were hand dyed for me to my design by a lovely lady called Peta [link] Yeah they are pretty expensive but worth it for what they are, and how amazing they look. That's the only place I'm aware of that you can buy them in Australia or anywhere really.

It was so great to meet you on Saturday, we had so much fun hanging out with you. Your Azula outfit was impressive, I loved how you'd done all the armour. I hope we'll meet again at the next con.

You are my heroes for all being vets, by the way. Saving the animals one cosplay at a time! lol

The custom silk was so beautiful! And I loved the waterbending bags too. What a good idea, storing the pois there. Bags are always an essential part of cons, it's really cool when you can work them into your cosplay like that.
