Description
YOU! OBEY THE FIST!Melbourne Armageddon 2011. I love that the backdrop of this place fit so well with the feel of the show.
With thanks to Jeremy for being our Prof Membrane, he earnt a lot of love in his first ever cosplay.
It was a great day. I just couldn't stop laughing at everyone, all day, it was just so amazing to see you all. This was one of my dream cosplays and I'm so thankful to my os cordites for making it come true so spectacularly. So much love

Construction notes
As always we all enjoy a challenge in converting a cartoon into real life. For Zim, I tried to capture a sci fi look while trying to retain the quirky comedy of the show.
Outfit:
Tunic and shirt were both entirely made by me. The bottom lighter pink shirt is stretch lycra. My first use of overlocking to put a whole garment together, yay! The darker pink tunic is a stiff material I found in the dress fabric section. It is very lightly sparkly. I tossed up between ridiculously cartoony and comedically sci fi and went with the latter, ditching the giant collar and shoulders for a more subtle look. I still gave everything crazy angles where I could including the collar and shoulders. The black stripes on the tunic are actually made from press stud tape (each of varying sizes and spacing).
The bracers and shoes were made by me from vinyl, as per my usual methods (see writeup for Princess Azula). The black tights and gloves were store bought.
The pak was made in several stages. A cardboard and tape core, covered by sculptamold, a layer of paint and a layer of gloss. The entire thing is strapped to me in an X shape across my chest, entering at the sleeves and collar. Straps clicked together with clips made for bags. The straps themselves were also press stud tape, to hold the theme.
Makeup/accessories:
I wore two versions of this cosplay on the day. For the first two thirds of the day, I wore full red contacts thatc covered my pupils and just the bald cap with some plastic antennae sticking out (no wig). The contacts made me look fierce, and I scared numerous children (and parents), but my eyes tried to cry them out for the entire time. In the end I had to abandon the idea, trading in for Zim's human look by ripping out the doomcontacts and donning the cheapest most disgustingly plastic wig I could find (yay for two dollar shops).
I owe my undying love to ~forever-girl for spending the frustrating hours on my makeup because I was at the time wearing the full red contacts and therefore 90% blind. It was so not fun. She did amazing work and I could not have done it without her. We used an old trick for hiding my hair completely - I wore a wig cap, spirit glued down to my forehead (and into my sideburns and the tiny hairs on my neck...) followed by a bald cap (again spirit gummed down). We used two tones of green oil based makeup from Kryolan.
Getting spirit gum out of my hair was something akin to torture.
I bound my chest for this one, which my lungs did not like. In combination with the pak strapped across my chest, my breathing capacity was somewhat limited. The teeth came from Dental Distortions [link] and were seriously digging into my lip for most of the day. As mentioned, the wig came from a two dollar shop.
There were a lot of accessories I made for this cosplay. I made a retractable Irken invader flag, the ray gun was an imitation Nerf given to me by a friend. Lastly, as a surprise for fellow cosplayers that knew I had this planned... I had a head pigeon. More later
Pupils covered, ears covered, teeth covered, chest strapped down... as fellow cosplayers said.. yep, I committed to this one. I honestly don't think I'll ever be doing that again - full alien Zim I mean- but this "human" Zim was better anyhow.
I love a challenge, and this was one of my dream cosplays. Though it was one of my less (least?) comfortable costumes, I really enjoyed derping around all day with my fellow Os Cordites.

Four hours of doom, I say. I mean my Toph ones are superbly comfortable, I've worn those for 8 hours with minor effects. I'll never buy this brand again, it's the second time it's happened.
