Description We now return to our regular programming

"Go AWAY Dib, I'm in the zone."

Melbourne Armageddon 2011. I love that the backdrop of this place fit so well with the feel of the show.

With thanks to Jeremy for being our Prof Membrane, he earnt a lot of love in his first ever cosplay.
It was a great day. I just couldn't stop laughing at everyone, all day, it was just so amazing to see you all. This was one of my dream cosplays and I'm so thankful to my os cordites for making it come true so spectacularly. So much love

-TOAST! SO DELICIOUS
-Zim's TEETHIES
-GREEEEEEN!

For such a "simple" cartoon it was not a simple cosplay to pull off. But worth it in the end - it was SO much fun running around in character <3.

Construction notes
This photo has a good shot of Dib's hair from the side. That thing was sitting as it is shown here for the entire day. It was made the night before in our hotel room by ~little-match-girl and ~ubercaledor , based on the same construction ideas ~chrysocome had used for Nurse Joy's hair loopies.

At the core is a wire armature already coated in black. We sculpted this to form the basic shape, including also a flat base for the hairpiece to be attached to ~ubercaledor's real hair. To build this up, some very thick black pipe cleaners were woven around the wire. Finally, in a very messy process, kanekalon hair from a leftover wig was hot glued down to the pipe cleaner core. Apart from giving it padding, the fibres of the pipecleaner give holding power for the glue in the final layer of hair to cling to. To keep stray hairs in place, black thread was woven perpendicular around the kanekalon. This was repeated several times (kanekalon layer then thread to keep it in place). On the day, the legs of the hairpiece were woven into ~ubercaledor's real hair and hair gelled down.

The whole thing worked great and it held up for the day. It was impressive to see in person as it was a huge hairpiece which seemed to defy gravity and it gave ~ubercaledor extra height. It was particularly spectacular when both Dib and Membrane were together. Many people were impressed by the hairpiece (in fact, everyone's hair in the group) - including those who did not know what show the cosplay was from

LOL thatks heaps. It was actually really easy to make, if I'd taken more photos I'd post a tutorial. But of course I didn't think of photos during the crazy last minute pre-con prop making session that created it. If you're interested though, send me a message and I'll tell you how I made it.

alright did i tell you that i'm going to anime-con as Gaz? i probably did... but i would love to know how you did the costumes for zim and gaz. the 2 things i really love to know would be:

1: how on Irk did you do Zim's skin and Pak

2: how did you get or make Gaz's wig?

That's awesome MOAR GAZ LOVE!
1. Zim's skin was done using Kryolan theatrical makeup [link] I used a base of normal oil based foundation (matched to Chryso's natural skin colour) and set it with translucent powder. The base green colour was actually a blend of 2 greens in Kryolan supracolor: a bright, almost fluorescent lime green, and a duller grey green to acheive the perfect colour. I tried using a foundation brush but I found that it actually went on much better with a sponge. I did a number of layers to get a nice even, solid colour and set each layer with translucent powder. I then used a darker forest green to contour the cheekbones, temples, jaw and eye areas.

2 Here are Chryso's notes on how she made the Pak:
The pak was made in several stages. A cardboard and tape core, covered by sculptamold, a layer of paint and a layer of gloss. The entire thing is strapped to me in an X shape across my chest, entering at the sleeves and collar. Straps clicked together with clips made for bags. The straps themselves were also press stud tape, to hold the theme.
I beleive she has some photos of the process and I'm sure she'd be happy to share then if you would like them.

3.
Gaz's wig was ridiculously simple and I actually styled it on the morning of the con, sitting on the floor of our hotel room. I bought it from a local wig shop in Melbourne but you can find similar things on ebay. It was just a purple bob with reasonably long bangs. I literally just divided the bangs roughly into 4 sections, held each section in the shape that I wanted and added a crap-ton (this is a legitimate unit of measurement) of hairspray. I just worked them into the points with my fingers and held them bent over my palm as it was drying. I did the same with the side sections until they stuck forward in the right way.

Hope this helps - good luck with your Gaz, I lok forward to seeing it.

Hi, this is Chryso who cosplayed as Zim. If you pop over to our cosplay facebook page here: [link] I'll post up pictures of the Pak process in the next couple of days as well as a basic tutorial.
The triangle sleeves have craft foam on the inside and are covered with fabric, then stitched onto the tunic. The craft foam helps it to hold its shpe.

By the way I actually normally have a LOT of hair which I had to coil around my head and pin in place with approximately ten thousand bobby pins to fit the wig on. This is actually a good thing cos it fills out the wig at the back of my head giving that proper full bob look.
