Lizardpaw is a jittery individual who, due to his complicated history is rightfully worried and scared almost all of the time. He only feels safe around other members of safe haven and most likely won't ever leave the walls again by himself unless it's absolutely necessary. He's terrified of ashen, and darklings, but generally he's pretty nice once you get to know him. a bit remorseful for the loss of everything from his past, though he only outwardly displays indifference for just about everything. He's easy to please in that he has a "its better than nothing" attitude, but isn't happy-go-lucky about it either.
History
Born into a world devistated by the calamity, Lizardpaw only knows of the charred ashen wasteland that lays before him. His mother was a rogue who did her best to take care of him as they traveled the wastes, he was her only kitten and she spent all her time and energy raising him in this cold forsaken world. Telling him stories about the way the land used to be, to try and lighten the mood. He had a hard time believing the stories to be true, and just thought they were fairy tales made up to make life seem better than it was. However, he didn't seem to mind the bleak outlook of the land, and could still find reasons to survive and live in the world he was presented with.
When he was around 6 moons old, he and his mother encountered a few other cats that had been traveling and surviving in the wastes. With them came a young she-cat with dark grey fur and even darker markings across her eyes. She was named Raccoonpaw, after the old world creature she resembled. Her parents were clan cats and named her as the traditions of their clan. They taught Lizard and his mother about how clans worked, and gave them new names when they decided to join them on their travels. Raccoonpaw was older than Lizardpaw was but she clung to the stories of the old world like truth. With hope, with all her heart and all her soul. She longed for a world like that, instead of this apocalyptic ashen wasteland that they were doomed to travel. For a while she was brave, she was fierce, and she was full of hope. She believed that this world could somehow be revived and turned back into the old beautiful stories that her parents had talked about. She used this passion, this hope, to channel her abilities to be the very best at anything she did. Lizardpaw looked up to her comradery as a role model.
But like all good things, they must come to an end. The group had stopped traveling for several weeks, finding it useless in their repeated attempts to try and locate the source of the call. So instead they made camp and had been living there for enough time that things started to get harder on them than they had expected. They were mercilessly attacked by ashen. The fight was a blur, and Lizardpaw wouldn't remember the exact details if you asked him. But he was caught in the maw of a banshee at one point, Raccoonpaw saved him. He remembered how vigilant she fought, trying to save everyone.. but in the end, the two young apprentices were the only ones who made it out of their makeshift camp alive.
Lizardpaw was hurt badly from the fight, but this was just the first of his injuries to come. He walked with a bit of a limp for the next few weeks, and his ear had been practically torn off. But he and Raccoonpaw carried on. They didn't know where they were going, and they barely spoke to eachother for the first couple days on their own, because they were both devistated over the loss of their parents.
Lizardpaw became fidgety and scared of sleeping, thinking that the ashen monsters would come and get them whenever they let their guard down, but Raccoonpaw assured him that he would be safe and she would protect him. He admired her bravery, and took the time to recover that he needed. The two of them tried training together to help in future attacks against the ashen monsters, but Lizardpaw was useless in combat. Because of this, he acted more of the lookout and the hunter, and Racoonpaw as the protector. She fought many ashen beasts as they encountered them, and she looked like she was starting to get exhausted but she never complained.
Soon, food and water started to become scarce. The two apprentices started starving. They searched and scavenged as best they could in order to find things that would help them survive in this cruel and darkened world. It wasn't easy, and they didn't find much. The two were starting to hallucinate, and they were both dying from starvation and thirst. Raccoonpaw broke down. She wasn't herself anymore, she was screaming and crying and lost everything about herself that Lizardpaw ever looked up to, she said she was weak and admitted how much it hurt her that she couldn't save everyone and now they were going to die and everything was useless. Lizardpaw was taken back, he tried to help comfort his friend but he had no idea what to say. Then, they found something. A twoleg heap of some kind, something they could dig through that might save their lives. They both ran for it, not paying attention to what was around them. Lizardpaw dove headfirst into the heap and searched for anything he could find that they could eat or drink. Raccoonpaw did the same.
They found things to survive off of in that heap, but at the cost of benig spotted by an Ashen Warrior. It silently approached them and waited, with some kind of henious mission, it stalked them both as they laughed and played in the garbage they found. The Ashen Warrior attacked. Its body dripping a tarlike substance as it lept straight for Lizardpaw, pushing him into a collection of barbed wire that tore and ripped at his fur while the Warrior lashed at his throat. He screamed, and Raccoonpaw barely moved. She stared as the beast attacked her friend, and she stood there, unmoving, as though something was wrong deep inside her. She watched in horror while Lizardpaw screamed and tried to fight his way out of the trap but it was no use. Suddenly she seemed to remember what was happening, and lept forward to save her friend, fighting off the Ashen Warrior with newfound strength and vigor, she killed it. Shadows dripping from her maw, she killed it. Standing there with a horrified expression on her face she slowly turned towards Lizardpaw who was still struggling in the barbed wire trap, blood everywhere scraping his throat he could barely speak. So Raccoonpaw spoke for him. "...How many times will this happen?" She said, her voice low and distant. "...How many times will I have to fight, just to hold off the inevitable." Lizardpaw's eyes were covered in tears from the pain, his fur matted with blood and ash. He couldn't move or do much to answer.
Raccoonpaw started laughing quietly. She backed up a few paces from Lizardpaw, shaking her head. "No, it's no use. There is no reason to fight any more." Lizardpaw's expression turned to horror as he struggled to break free of the trap. The most impassioned, hopeful cat he knew.. breaking down like this in front of him. He knew she was about to do something rash, but he had no idea to what degree.
The she-cat sprung forward towards her trapped friend, pushing the barbed wires deep into Lizardpaw's neck, trying to cut him. He coughed and struggled against her grip as her faded eyes looked unwavering into his own, she was making sure he would never escape this entanglement. "The old world can't come back, not in this wasteland." She said, taking a few steps back, happy with her work on Lizardpaw's throat. She smiled sadly and turned towards the wasteland, heading for a large ravine in the ground that seemed to fall into nothingness for miles. "Goodbye, Lizardpaw." She said, her voice faint and with a twinge of.. something else. She let herself step forward over the abyss, dangling her paws over the nothingness. "I'll see you soon."
She fell.
Lizardpaw couldn't wrench himself free from the trap until it was too late. Raccoonpaw had saved him so many times previously, and he couldn't do anything to save her when she needed him the most.
The apprentice soon fell unconscious from blood loss and dehydration. He doesn't know how he survived. However, he woke up in the care of some other cats who must have found him on their travels and managed to save his life.
He never spoke about what had happened to him when they asked. In fact, It took him a very long time to even work up the courage to ever speak again.
Behaviors and Tactics
-The scars around his neck are incredibly noticible, so he tries to hunch over and hide them as best he can
-It also severely hurt him in the past with the barbed wire and all, so his voice is really scratchy and at times can be difficult to understand, your character may feel pity for him when hearing him speak. He tries not to if he can help it.
-If danger happens, he's going to find a place to hide rather than to do anything to fight it
-He's terrified of ashen, and darklings
-He most likely will never become randomly curageous, as he already failed his friend in the past he doesn't feel like there's anything he can do to make up for it, he's already taken the scars for that fight so what's another three?
-He can climb up trees really well and probably will get stuck up there at some point
