This is what happens when you attempt to put together every bad paleoart meme still alive in the field of feathered dinosaur illustration. Behold and despair!This little project was originally intended as a follow-up to Worst. Deinonychus. Ever. Β because I couldn't address feathers in that one. However I fell seriously ill before finishing it, leaving it lingering for two years. Thankfully in the meantime lots of people have made good scientifically accurate guides to feathered dinosaur anatomy so I don't have to feel so bad about releasing this abomination to the interwebs.
This non-inforgraphic is not intended as an actual guide. If you do want to use it somehow, just do the opposite of what the anti-guide advises you to do.
(Disclaimer: not all of the advice in this anti-guide is 100% bad all of the time. If you however can't tell the universally bad advice from the situationally bad, make sure to read up on dinosaur anatomy and taxonomy before you try illustrating one.)

I was planning on giving my Deinonychus a color scheme based on the golden eagle, if that's what you mean.

My first reaction would be to advise you to pick a side, either accurate or crowd-pleasing. If you try too hard to make it both, it won't end up being either. It just isn't realistic anymore to portray Deinonychus without a body covering of at least ratite-style feathers, including primaries and secondaries in the arms. Maybe the best solution accuracy-wise would be to use a different dinosaur, or just take the chance and trust in the ability of your audience to accept Deinonychus for what it was?

Fully feathered, but with the classic theropod outline still showing through. Is there any obvious problem with that?

Oh, I thought that you might want to avoid feathers as much as possible. Sorry, my mistake. The only thing I notice that is unquestionably wrong is the way the primaries attach to the arm rather than the hand.Β The plumage is a bit form-fitting of course, but that's not the end of the world, especially in a work of fiction.

Simply taking the exact same coloration from living birds is one of the things that annoys me the most.
