I did this for Sketchtember and ended up making it too much of a finished concept painting that I wanted to share it as a larger image with a more complete description.ΒThis version of Rodan may still vaguely look like a hypergiant pterosaur, but it's not. It is actually a highly derived weirdo dinosaur. It's been interpreted either as a scansoriopterygian or a volant ornithopod, and frankly I'm fine with either. What matters is its Mesozoic ancestor had protofeathers that have been modified into nasty big quills.Β

That would actually make a bit more sense than a giant pterosaur for some reason. Guess it's since Rodan's usually depicted as standing on two legs.

Very nice work. I imagine Rodan looking a lot like this for the new movie. This is rendered beautifully. While a bit too dinosaurian for my tastes, I respect how well it's done, and feel it still looks enough like Rodan to actually BE RODAN. I speculate Legendary will take their Rodan design in a very similar direction.Β

Thanks! I'm not sure why you're referencing Archaeopteryx, but scansoripterygids are the only paravians known to have evolved membraneous wings.

Welcome! I guess you don't know your kaiju that well, or their origins. In short, Rodan/Radon was originally going to be a ArchaeopteryxΒ wikizilla.org/wiki/Giant_Archaβ¦ , as there is concept art with the kaiju having feathers before being converted in a pterosaur.Β

Ooooh, nice! I love your idea of Rodan not being a literal pterosaur, but a different kind of reptile entirely (in this case, a dinosaur) that just happened to have evolved superficially similar traits. It's more creative that way, IMO.
Your Rodan design is pretty great too. He looks very mean and gnarly, especially with all of those quills. I also like his wrinkly skin, it makes him look ancient and kind of wise in a sense.
