In my case, it's because I use mostly Thorne and Sarsa characters, and they have a distinct similarity. I also tend to use Aiko - the same base - with her default body setting. I did make Raine a little shorter and thinner, but to keep the family resemblance, I used the same character for both. Ultimately though, the limits of the clothing available for them give you a "out of the same mold" problem that you simply can't get away from.
On the other hand, if I tried to draw this, the characters wouldn't look the same - not even the same character from one panel to the next.

yes, there is a range of ethnicity available, though I tend to use what I am exposed to in real life, which is Australian, a little Asian, and a little European, but all of them somewhat "animefied".
