Description This is a chiton. A marine browser that travels slowly across undersea rocks eating algae and leaving a clean trail in it's wake. It has an eight segmented plate armor structure that has always fascinated me. The underside has strong muscles that cling tightly in strong current or if molested.
I have taken some liberties in making it an art piece and exaggerated the spiky axis structure, but it is based on a real species indigenous to Vancouver Island and as far North as Alaska. The one I speak of has bright orange coloring and pronounced spikes ,deeply incised with a chevron pattern...
I've identified it as:
Tonicella Lineata

Welded bronze,(underside) to stainless steel(topside).
The plates started out as scrap oval shapes from the laser cutter.(notice the telltale CERF(cut) on the side edge of some of the plates).
Length-5 inches overall.

Wow. I like this. It has a sinmplicity that I find quite enjoyable. What did you use to join the stainless to the bronze?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ou8nrtist2 In reply to SeurAaron [2010-06-08 17:36:51 +0000 UTC]

Hey Aaron,
The bronze is silicon bronze(98%copper)with a smidgen of silicon. The silicon allows it to be welded DIRECTLY to stainless steel with the MIG wire feed welder.Even many lifelong welders are unaware of this fact since most initially learn industrial techniques and bronze is not considered a "structural"material.
Silicon bronze can be welded to stainless steel using the MIG process in two ways.
First,by using stainless steel wire and a tri-mix shielding gas(commercially available as Stargon)as I've done with this piece,or by running silicon bronze wire using straight argon as a shielding gas. The secondary approach creates more spatter and is not quite as strong a bond.
I have many pieces where I have welded these dis-similar metals together.
Here's another:

SeurAaron In reply to ou8nrtist2 [2010-06-12 14:53:57 +0000 UTC]

I think I understand. The silicon acts as a internal flux within the structure of the bronze alloy raising the melting/fusion temperature makeing the metals act more similarly from a technical standpoint. I wonder if this idea can be applied to other metals. I think I remember someting about the Japanese folding together bronze, gold, and silver.

ou8nrtist2 In reply to SeurAaron [2010-06-12 15:45:36 +0000 UTC]

The Japanese method,Makume gane is a completely different process involving diffusion bonding.

The process of welding stainless steel to sili-bronze is an ARC WELDING process and has more to do with molecular compatibility than matching temperature.

AaronsDesk [2008-09-24 06:37:09 +0000 UTC]

Wow, very cool, I can see why that animal is an inspiration, what a fantastic shape!

That stainless looks fairly thick, it must have been a pain to shape it so smoothly? (the end result is well worth it though) and the blueing/colouring on the plates is very nice, as is the 'rough' edges of the cuts.
Also the balanced shape of this and the way it stands freely is genius!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ou8nrtist2 In reply to AaronsDesk [2008-09-24 07:52:19 +0000 UTC]

The bronze plate on the underside is even thicker than the stainless top plates.
I just got a bunch more scrap ellipses in stainless which is the raw material from which these spiky plates were made.
So I'm now pondering what armored critter to make next...

It was Tonicella lineata that inspired the piece, however I went off in a different direction with the protruding spiky plates...
I plan to do an ACCURATE tonicella lineata featuring the heavily incised chevron pattern at some later date, and utilizing mixed metals to advantage I'll warrant.
