Description
This is another model of a larger work I hope to fabricate some day. It is also inspired by the "Towie Stone"but appears more like a seed pod than any formal mathematical geometry.I am in love with strange and beautiful organic forms, and find in them the greatest inspiration for my sculpture...
Welded stainless steel-2 3/4 inch diameter. After polishing I used the torch to reheat the interstices to accomplish those rainbow iridescent colors. I just thought it might be a nice juxtaposition.
This piece is available for purchase.
Please note me for pricing.

Mmmm. Can't help but wonder what plant, tree or creature might emerge from that "pod"....

Organic forms are always intriguing.
They have a familiarity that runs deep in our collective psyches without even being able to say exactly what something is or identify it further...

Yep. You can get them in stainless and lots of other materials at [link] , although shipping's high unless you're in canada.

Wow,
That link is great !
and scales too !
I was thinking about doing another somewhat larger scale dragon:

and precut scales would sure lend a nice quality to the surface of the beasty.
And they even have split ring pliers that look like they might actually work ! LOL
Thank you so much ...

Honestly, I tried them once and gave up on the entire idea of split rings entirely. Haha. I don't plan on making much out of scales past jewelry, and I have aluminum scales so I don't really think there's much use for the split rings on such a small level. I actually don't even know where those split ring pliers are right now! Haha.

It looks like the mirror finish still has some scratches in it, but other than that it looks good. Are you going to clean up the seams or leave them as is?

I'll leave as is.
This is a model for a larger work(hopefully), but I really like the heat patina I was able to achieve,so yes it's done as is.

Possibly,I DO have a brilliant young chemist/artist who does all my patinas.
I think it may depend on whether it's a commission or whether I end up building it on speculation.

Speculation? How do you mean?

ou8nrtist2 In reply to erinightwind [2008-10-02 01:41:57 +0000 UTC]
"Building it on speculation"means, I build it without a commission,at my own personal expense, on the "speculation" that I will eventually sell it and recap my capital investiture...
It is very expensive to make larger scale sculptures both because of time and costly materials.

Ah, that's what I'd thought you meant, but I wasn't completely sure. I'm aware of how expensive such materials can be, yes. I'm sure you'll manage to sell the item, if this preliminary model is anything to go by.

Too. cool. I like this one a lot.
Been thinking, and I may design a tobacco pipe based on the 4 lobed version....Now I just need a source for decent sized pieces of Briar. This won't be small....

It's the single most popular wood that doesn't require a lined bowl due because its very resistant to fire. And I haven't found a source on the metal bowl liners that I've seen used.
Here's a couple links:

Redwood is TOXIC when burnt,
In fact the wood itself is toxic that's one reason it is naturally bug resistant.
Farmers cannot make bedding for horses or cattle with it because they inevitably eat some and it makes them sick...
I live in the middle of the "Redwood Empire",so trust me on this...
The heartwood is actually considered a hardwood but not the outside of the tree.
I was wondering, would meerschaum be an alternative material to consider ?

I had suspected from the smell when carving that burning redwood probably wasn't too keen a notion.... No fear, I'm not going to make a pipe out of cedar either.
Getting meerschaum to carve is far harder than getting briar. But if you know a source, by all means, let me know, I'd love to carve more than pipes out of it, as it's soft enough to work fairly easily, for a natural stone.
Since the last comment, I've found several briar suppliers, but the mostly sell blocks that are cut for "normal" pipe shapes, not the more or less round shape I'd need for this. *sigh* The search goes on. I do have someone I can contact about a couple of the other woods on that alternates list.
I've been wanting to get ahold of some more, preferably harder redwood burl for awhile, but I've noticed that the quality varies wildly, as does the price, and I can't afford to fly out your way to pick out wood.
Yet.

You're on your own finding meerschaum to carve,
But I'll bet it's available if you're tenacious and resourceful enough.
It has one distinct advantage over briar ,though it's certainly more delicate.
The tobacco has a sweeter flavor over time in a meerschaum bowl. The stone somehow tends to improve the flavor. It's well documented.
In the early seventies you could fine huge redwood burls washed up on the beach Norht of Jenner near the mouth of the Russian River, free for the choosing. these days they're a bit harder to come by,but they're still around.

I can get Meerschaum bowl inserts, like what's used for calabash pipes. I may try that for the Towie Stone inspired pipe, and carve the edge of the bowl as well. I still think that the redwood I have is too soft even if I use an insert. So I still need to find a decent sized chunk of "something interesting".
If you see any smaller chunks (since I've seen pics of "huge" redwood burls) washed up, could I talk you into letting me pay shipping? I love the color and pattern of redwood burls.

Hey, unlike many carvers I've talked to online, I ALWAYS wear a respirator if I'm in any doubt about the material I'm working.
You ought to watch me etch metal...mask/gloves/apron/acid-resistant-tongs...Yeah, for nitric acid. I'm not one of those "Safe? Sure, it's safe. Watch this!" types. Heck, I'm really suspicious of the whole "roasting fish on a cedar plank" thing, for that matter. I know how toxic cedar fumes are, so if you say redwood is toxic when burned, I believe you.

I am reassured,
and you are smart to be this way.
As one who has spent long years employing many potentially dangerous tools,I can tell you with utter confidence, that EVEN WITH all the best safety equipment there will still be occasional injuries. But with diligent ,disciplined, and habitual use of protective equipment, those injuries will remain minor.
