Description oC Networking Explanation.

oC Canvas 1.1. A drawing program that allows you and your friend to use it's networking capablities to draw together. Yes, that's right it allows you to join with you friend and you to draw with each other on one canvas.

The program itself can be found here . Don't worry! It's shareware, meaning it's free and legal to download. Now that you have the program let's learn how to use it. Let's run though the basics.

If you have a router between you and your interent connect you must forward the port (allow it to pass). I don't know how to do this yet, my brother did it for me.
oC runs on ports 9002, 9001 and 9000.

There I think that is the basics of getting started. ^^

Okay, here is how to run this thing so that it works.
I hope you have it in English first. If not go to the last part of the menu at the top and click on it. There will be a bit saying English, click on it. (See figure 1)
Right, networking is easy. First though you must decide who is hosting. The person hosting cannot have any kind of firewall on. So if they do I recommend that they shut it off. If you do not want to take it off I suggest to let the firewall let oC though. (Please note me if you do not know how to do this and want to) If you have a firewall in your router I don't quite know how to fix it. So basically you can't host if you are running of a router with a firewall until you get someone to come and sort it.

Right now the hosting person goes into OC. Click on the menu that says "Network" then go into "Show network window". (see figure 2 and 3) The host wants to be the server so stay on that tab. Type in the name they want. Passwords are not required. Now click on the standby button and your Canvas will appear. Did you see that little
white box? That is the chat box. In it will hold the an IP address. This is not the right one. You need to go to whatismyip.com That will tell you your IP in big numbers at the top.(see figure 4) If your friend receives this message "?????????? 10060" then you are gonna have to forward ports and stuff.

Now for the person who wishes to join. They must go into OC and also go into the "Show Network Window". They they click on the bit that says Client. (see figure 5) They put in the IP address the host has given them and then put in their name. Once again, if there was no password put in it is not needed. Click on the box beside the IP which has something like this on it "..'+".
Ta-da! That's it! It should take a little while to connect and then you will see the people/host's (who are also there drawing) name/s appear in the right part of the chat box.

You canvas will appear and then that it! Start drawing.

Little notes:
The hosting person will be on the bottom layer meaning that everone will draw over them.
If the people decide to invite another person into the drawing the person coming in will not see the drawing so far, only the events after they join.
Remember to set the layers and number of people. You wouldn't want to set up a drawing with only one layer and and 2 places and meant for 3 people who like lots of layers.
The host can choose to switch on and off other people's layers
As far as I know you cannot continue your oc sessions. The drawing can be saved when closed by the host though.
It's a good idea to take a .bmp pics now and again. To do this go to show and click on "Quick save as bmp" at the bottom. Anyone can do this.

There ya go, it should all work hopefully. If it doesn't contact me via note. I will try to help as much as I can but, as you see, I'm no expert.

I hope I have helped you and you are free to use this explanation as long as you said it was me "~OutcastWolf " that took their time to find and write it all out. P
Thanks for reading and please excuse my spelling/grammar mistakes, I am a terrible typer.

Adios for now my friends. ^^

It's okay!

Oh. Are all firewalls down/allowing OpenCanvas to pass through them?

Do either of you run on a router?

Who is hosting the session?

Just curious, but do you know how to fix OC for users who have computers that wont let it open all the way? I got a laptop recently, and it wont load OpenCanvas for me, it did this to my other computer too at first, but someone told me to change something (and I don't remember) and it worked fine. And I no longer have contact to that person. >.o

Open all the way? As in the program or the networking? I don't quite understand.

No, the program itself, Open Canvas wont open. I can network fine, hamachi works great, its just that OC wont load all the way. D:

What happens to it? Does it just crash? Does it give an error?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheGhostDragon In reply to OutcastWolf [2007-12-27 03:34:41 +0000 UTC]

No, no error message. I open it, and it loads the background and thats it. And if you click on it(anywhere) THEN it'll give you an error message saying the program isn't operating. ._.; And I have to close it.

I honestly have no idea what's happening...I mean it's very vague and it could be a matter of many problems. Is your version corrupt?

TheGhostDragon In reply to OutcastWolf [2007-12-27 17:36:07 +0000 UTC]

I don't have any idea if its corrupt or not. It could just be that I need to download it from a source different that where I had.

I got a working version. I'll upload it for you...

Hope this link works: [link]

(All you have to do is put the code you see in the top right hand corner into the box and then you can download it.)

Wow, thank you SO much for this tutorial, I always became desperate on how to use the network system, but thank's to you I'm more clever now on how to use this

Haha, thank you very much for the favourite and the comic! I hope it all works for ya, as I'm a bit useless when it freaks out. Too bad some of my friends are unable to bypass it either since they are computer illiterate (somewhat)

Fowarding ports means you probably have a router and you must try and configure your router to allow the ports mentioned to pass. I can't really help you here, you have to look up a tutorial on your specific router to bypass this problem.

Er, whoah. XD Thank you. The thing is, it's a very difficult thing to explain to you - as each service provider ( like AOL or Pipex for me) has a different way of doing this. You gotta contact your service provider methinks, or locate a more in depth tutorial on the internet. I'm sure there is one our there for your provider. ^_^
