Description An ink adaptation of a wonderful photograph from the (outdated) book A Day in the Life of the Soviet Union, showing a girl from a tiny fishing village on the Baltic coast, collecting (and sampling) seagull eggs.  The photographer is Yuri Vendelin.

I'm really trying to work on achieving depth primarily by using line width.  So I used a Hunts 101 nib and a brush in the foreground, and then a crow quill for much of the background (plus some touch up with a .01 copic marker).  The original is 11x14, and I'm afraid I've lost some of the detail in this scan.

Be sure to click the image to view it at full size!  The reduction seems a bit blurry.

Ah ha! Thought I'd recognized some Franklin Boothesque's influences (or just similarities) in your work!
He even has a preset category in the google image search, if you can believe it!
My favorite: outsidelogic.com/franklinbooth…

I like what I've seen of your work a lot. It's very good.
And never underestimate a good cloud. Like an invitation for reverie and mischief! Drawing mischief that is!

Yes, Booth is a huge influence..although how he achieves his effects still baffles me.  I think his clouds are the easiest thing to emulate...and they add a cool dimension to just about any picture .

Thanks for all the nice comments.

I may be wrong, but you believe emulating clouds is easier, because you naturally entertain the intuitive freedom of expression given by their ever changing shapes. Their being free is like enabling you to enter a world free of judgment, reference or constraint. Except that they have to BE clouds. So you are free as long as you respect what they are, embody them. Give them life. And you unconsciously do that while simultaneously entertaining the constraints of other subjects, giving them (the constraints) life by your own volition.
Yet in reality, they are identical in all and every respect. You can alter, personalize, manipulate or project onto any the same reveries, phantoms or ideations of your choosing.
Decide all are clouds and free yourself. Your talent is way sufficient to do so.
Just think about it: a whole category of images dedicated to clouds on the world's largest search engine... What does that tell you? Everybody draws clouds. All visual artists incorporate them to their landscape art. Why do people search for this? To enjoy. To enjoy the fact he gave them life and freedom. Independently if you will. He gave life to that too.
So if you can do that, you should have no problem with the rest. And I don't believe you should.

Yes, that generally how people do it, although there is no hard-and-fast rule.  Often you'll see a heavier and darker foreground, with the main subject in the middle ground done in lighter values, and then a darker background.

your lifework is amazing and i believe you achieved your goal in achieving depth by using line width. Very nice !

Yeah, there are some really fine lines in the background that sort of get lost here.  I really need to get a good scanner.  Right now, I just take pictures of my drawings and then try too them looking good in GIMP.

Ah that sounds frustrating. To think they could even look that much better than this. Hope you sort that out.

The way you did the clouds gives a lot of flow constrasting with the rigid lines of the girl, and they also take the attention to her and not to other less important elements. That basket is very well done, maybe just a simple line below the far left (and lowest) cloud will help to separate it from the sky.

Thanks for the comments.  You might be right about that cloud...maybe I'll pencil it in and see what it looks like
