Description "A drum, a drum! Macbeth doth come."

Here is the second in my series of illustrations from Macbeth. The three witches, the weird sisters, the creepy ladies who sense weakness in Macbeth and start him on his road to ruin. They speak in these rhythmic rhyming couplets that have continued to inspire generations of evil sorceresses . Yes, they were the ones who said:

"Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble."

There are just so many ways to draw them. I started out with the old crone in the lower left, but then I decided they shouldn't all look like typical old crones. So I made one fat, which is a bit tricky because creepy and evil old witches tend to be withered and gnarled like old sticks.

For this drawing, I pictured them as they hear the drum that signals Macbeth's approach. Here they will meet him and Banquo for the first time, and pass on the prophesies that will affect both characters so differently.

This was done with my usual Bamboo Fun tablet and GIMP. And, as usual, all criticism and opinions are welcome. Thanks for viewing! And read the play!

Awesome drawing! I love the shading, and their expressions.
Haha! There's so many depictions of the witches in movie versions of Macbeth... In my English class last year, our teacher showed us snippets of 3 different movies to show us how the witches were portrayed. The oldest of the movies portrayed them similarly to you, but there was this version with Patrick Stewart as Macbeth which portrayed the witches as nurses (which I thought was very weird...)Β  41.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m92…

Yeah, that is weird.Β  But one of the great things about Shakespeare is that he gave so little in terms of physical description or stage directions, that his work can be presented in a million different ways. We saw a Macbeth production a couple of years ago that took place in 1980s Afghanistan. It really worked. When the witches were brewing their potion, one of them actually gave birth to the baby that they used for it.Β  It was really dramatic and disturbing.

Have you seen the new movie version with Micheal Fassbender and and Marion Cotillard? It opens here first week in December. My younger daughter and I are over-the-top excited (she's 17 like you and a Macbeth fanatic).Β  I hope it's good...

Oh! I hadn't heard about the new version!
Hopefully it's in cinemas near where I live, so I can go see it as well!

It looks interesting but it's probably going to have to much extra stuff added to it to make a feature length film.

Thanks. It was a challenge to come up with distinctive expressions for what have become cliche'd characters.

An exquisite piece of work. Is that a snake in the big girl's ear?

BTW, fat isn't comical. That body form can be just as evil looking as any other. Just sayin'.

outsidelogic In reply to Melalina [2012-11-10 22:28:24 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. And yes, it's a snake, although whether it's real or just a piece of jewelry is open for interpretation. Her ear ended up as the center of the picture, so I felt it needed something distinctive.

Regarding your point about fat: you are 100% right...that shows how pervasive these cultural biases are. I appreciate you pointing it out, and I changed my comment.

Were you reading a ton of Macbeth lately? And see, I would read the play, if I wasn't busy reading all of Sophocles' plays in a very short span of time because for some reason my english teacher assumes we've already read all of them...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

outsidelogic In reply to Clockhound [2012-10-19 06:25:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I read a "ton of Macbeth"...the whole darned play actually.

This is what happens when you go to a hifalutin NYC school; they assume you sit at home and read Sophocles in your spare time. No one actually does that except Cori, but she's a little odd. Anyway, I cheated on Macbeth; I listened to it, with commentary. There's a series of recordings called SmartPass Audio...highly recommended. It's a GREAT way to experience Shakespeare. Maybe they do Sophocles too...

Clockhound In reply to outsidelogic [2012-10-19 11:40:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, that would be amazing. Not because Sophocles is bad, just because all of the copies of his plays that I have are really old translations. Thanks, Dad.
