Description These were drawn with a fountain pen, from life, and show some of the wonderful rock and tree formations in the nearby parkland.  I love to wander off-trail and discover these hidden places; once in a while I can take the time to sit down and sketch as well, although not as often as I'd like.

These were done on a cheap 9x12 sketchpad.

what brand is your sketchpad?

Thanks, Carlos.  Regarding the sketchpad, I don't even know.  The cover of it has been ripped off.  My usual choice for a basic white sketchpad is a Strathmore 400 series.

Da-yummmmm that's some gorgeous line-weight there on that rock slab, and I love how you deal with textures.
Awesome work; thanks for sharing!

Thank you.  Yeah, I've found that this kind of mutli-directional hatching is the best way to capture rock textures with pen.

Dear me, this is gorgeous!
Absolutely love the details and shape made through the direction of the brush strokes themselves.

Beautiful work! A lot of nice details and attractive textures.
But I suggest showing these as two distinct pieces of art. When I frame these with my fingers I can see they are nicely composed. But they seem to interfere with each other when I see them together.

Thank you!  The funny thing is that I almost didn't post them at all because I figured they were just sketches, but you are the second person to tell me they are well-composed and could be framed.  I appreciate you taking the time to look and for the kind words.

Awesome ! Makes you think how a pine may live for a thousand years, although they start out so tiny.

Yeah, yhe whale is there, tje reptile is there, buy I would swear that the litl+tle pine is putting its hands to its hrad !

Yeah, it's truly amazing how these big trees grow out of a crack in the rock.  Thanks!

awsgames [2015-07-14 02:09:58 +0000 UTC]

You can tell the ground the tree on the right is growing out of side went tumbling away because of the sharp bend in the tree. Trees like to point straight up, so when the ground shifts as the tree grows out, the base of the tree grows in a way to point the tree back upwards. It must have been a really bad mud slide or something for the tree to have to bend at an almost 90 degree angle. When you go shopping for property, a good way to tell if the property you're looking at is on steady ground is by looking at the trees, if they're straight up then the house in in a good location, but if they're bent then that's indicative of the ground slowly sliding away, and it may cause structural issues for your house down the line.

More on topic, I love the way you've drawn these. Great job at making the trees and bark look textured, I almost feel like I can reach out and touch them. Really great work, especially with just ink.

First, thanks for the compliment...glad you like the ink work.

Second, very interesting point on the growth of the tree.  I'm sure the tree is old (this is the Colorado Front Range, a semi-arid environment at about 7500 feet in elevation), so things grow slowly.  And this tree is growing on the sides of a place I call Dead Fox Gulch (because I found...guess what...a dead fox there), so there's been some erosion.

Although you were drawing realism in this beautiful line drawings, I can see reptile on the left one and human gesture on the right - beautiful!

Ha, I think of the one on the left as a breaching whale, with the small tree as its spout.  Thanks for the nice comment!
