This painting is based off of my reaction to the Mogwai song "Hunted By a Freak". I listened to this song throughout the entire process (24+ hours including the thought process/planning). This is done in oil paints on illustration board.Related content

This painting is quite lovely. It's a rare thing to see someone with such technical proficiency for realism use expressionist color.
There are a couple of things that I hesistate with in this piece (the whole of the piece is such that these details do not bother me per se, but give pause). I like the way that you use what would be the negative space around the portrait to advance the emotion of the piece, but I think that the bottom of this could be cropped, as it makes the abstraction overpower the figure slightly. I might go so far as to crop out the tail end of the hair.
The background and the face both appeared to have been thinned out a bit, linseed oil or the like, which works beautifully, except that with the hair the paint has been applied more thickly. I can see how the busy detail of the hair warrants this to an extent, but I think that it throws the balance of the painting off a bit, almost makes the hair the focus of the painting.
As I said above, the whole of your painting, the achievement of it outweighs these petty details. Hope to see a continuance of astounding work appearing in your gallery.

Knew the inspiration before reading your description. Went to the record store and tried to buy their Young Team album, but they say it's discontinued. I hear "Mogwai Fear Satan" is their most beautiful song, and here I am without the album. How sad is that?
Like the use of colors - they don't seem like they would normally have a place in portraiture, but are used to wonderful effect. Face is beautifully rendered. Hair seems a little unsure. Still good, but not as good. Perhaps a bit too much shadow around the nose; my eye is constantly drawn to it. I was very glad to return from my DA hiatus and find another of your paintings. Many thanks. Keep it up.

I mean, you can clearly render realistically, good job on that. But the composition seems a little bland to me. The hair just pulls my eye right off the bottom of the page; the background needs something besides fuzzy color to bring the attention back to the face.
Just my opinion, no matter.

yeah its quite nice. i love the hair and how it curls around. and the colours are really good. It sets the whole mood but still looks beautiful in a way. like there is hope ahead for the sad looking girl
