Description
THANK YOU so much for my first DD! That was a nice surprise.
Thank you AFineWar for the suggestion, and alltheoriginalnames for the feature!
I very much appreciate it!
I usually make it a point to thank everyone individually, because I never take interest in my work - by anyone - for granted, but in this case it's just too much! Every single comment and is truly appreciated though! It means a lot.
The beginning of colonization efforts somewhere at the outer rim of our known universe. The ship designs are based in part on real NASA concepts, just as the Helios colony vessel.
COMPOSITION: Textured environment (starfield) and digital painting (planets, nebulae), composed in Photoshop. My work. Scene and lighting setup in Lightwave with final composition of all elements in Photoshop (including all FX).
MESHED: Helios Colony Vessel & Ark Ship by Jason Tinsley, Heavy Shuttle & X33 Shuttle by Kenny Mitchell.
Original size: 4500x1600.
Comments and critique welcome.
Thank you very much to TreeClimber for the valuable WIP input and suggestions!

Kinda looks lije a fuson of BSG and Babylon 5. That's a good thing, those are good references to pull from for 'realistic" sci-fi
Don't know if you looked to those for inspiration but whatever you used it shows a pretty optimistic future where space travel and settling on other worlds are common.

Well, actually neither of these shows were an anspiration in this instance, although you make a valid point. I was actually reading about real space travel concepts at the time and came accross the concept of the Helios Colony Vessel (the large one with the ring component).
Based on that I just searched for more 'real life' or 'current era' concept designs and figured I show them off together. I'm more a Star Trek fan than anything else, so yes, a positive outlook into our future was certainly a big part of it. If only we could finally settle our petty differences here on Earth and start embracing our shared curiosity in such a way!

Thank you. And agreed, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a live feed from NASA during my life time with a similar outlook!

Thank you very much.
Actually not as long as you might think. This was a week-end project for me. Late Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon (on and off). Maybe somewhere between 4 to 10 hours? Can't be more accurate, unfortunately, because I honestly don't remember!

anyway many hours. Usually people think that the artist spends little time at work because the skills and knowledge to be made quickly, and that is more pronounced in digital art, they think about most of the machines do. Congratulations

Well, art certainly doesn't create itself. I do admit though, I'm detail obsessed and I will spend more time than some people might perhaps, just on refining an image.

As was mentioned below this is a great peice of "Hard Sci-Fi" and I love the 'Mother ship'
Those Colonists look like they are very busy

Thank you very much. Yes, those are great concept designs. I'm fairly certain that they're not too far off reality, since NASA have recently accounced they even think 'warp drive' (as per Star Trek's faster than light engines) is a possibility with progressing technology.

Thank you. Well, those are all concept designs. Some more, some less based on real NASA concepts. In space functionality > beauty! (Althoug hif combined you get epic!)

overseer In reply to IllEatYourself [2012-11-13 04:11:20 +0000 UTC]
Well, concepts; a bit like those crazy demos that car companies design, but that don't actually ever get past the distant prototype stage. I guess I snapped the info up somewhere. Probably science news or something like that.

I like concept cars. They tend to look pretty cool, or at least be pretty creative in design. Not that I would ever use them unless they were decent. XD

True. But then without those concepts there certainly wouldn't be advancement.

I wonder what propels that ship. Could be an antimatter rocket of some sort.

overseer In reply to OddFox17 [2012-11-12 19:01:15 +0000 UTC]
It would probably be either the Plasma Rocket engine NASA has been tinkering with, or, based on current prototypes (that I'm aware of) the Xenon based NEXT thruster (an improvment of the original Ion drive system NASA was working on). During tests a thruster assembly running this type of experimental engine was in continuous operation for over 20,000 hours as far as I know. I'd have to read up on it again though.

Either way it probably took them a while to get there. Those colonists may actually be the descendents of the original crew.

Thank you!
I used Photoshop for 90% of the background elements (the starfield and asteroids were rendered (in Lightwave) and then added). The planets were created using several publicly available texture maps (NASA). The ships were all rendered with respective lighting setup in Lightwave. Everything was then composited in Photoshop, including effects etc.
