Description
THANK YOU so much for my first DD! That was a nice surprise.
Thank you AFineWar for the suggestion, and alltheoriginalnames for the feature!
I very much appreciate it!
I usually make it a point to thank everyone individually, because I never take interest in my work - by anyone - for granted, but in this case it's just too much! Every single comment and is truly appreciated though! It means a lot.
The beginning of colonization efforts somewhere at the outer rim of our known universe. The ship designs are based in part on real NASA concepts, just as the Helios colony vessel.
COMPOSITION: Textured environment (starfield) and digital painting (planets, nebulae), composed in Photoshop. My work. Scene and lighting setup in Lightwave with final composition of all elements in Photoshop (including all FX).
MESHED: Helios Colony Vessel & Ark Ship by Jason Tinsley, Heavy Shuttle & X33 Shuttle by Kenny Mitchell.
Original size: 4500x1600.
Comments and critique welcome.
Thank you very much to TreeClimber for the valuable WIP input and suggestions!

Thank you! I certainly wouldn't mind watching a live feed from NASA with this happening!

Kinda had given up on that sort of thing after nine years. I guess that made it even more so.

I like the realistic design of the ships. I've always felt that designs like this are more interesting than more fantastic ones like the Enterprise and such. What is great about the science fiction genre is that it explores what could be rather than what could not be, and this piece illustrates that. The strong lighting contrast is a nice touch as well.

Thank you. Well, those designs are certainly closer to our technological capabilities, but even NASA have announced recently that the warp drive (since you mentioned Star Trek's Enterprise) is something they no longer consider a fantasy. In fact there are some theories (from a Swiss scientist I believe) that make even faster than light travel possible by warping space time; without violating general relativity, too! We just need to solve some issues like power consumption now!
As for the lighting, I always orient myself on real space photographs. Stark contrasts is what you see there.

I'm still a bit skeptical about the whole warp drive thing. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see one built but the amount of energy it takes to warp space like that is way beyond our capabilities and it will be for some time. Then again, anything could happen in the future so I'm hopeful.

Well, yes, it's no more than a concept at this stage. I just look at all the development between 1900 and now alone. We can dive into the ocean for miles, we can fly at 20,000 feet, we have (albeit rudimentary) space travel, we're all interconnected at all times if we choose to. Just computers alone; $15,000 for a few MB hard drive in the mid 80s and now? A few bucks for a Terabyte...
Anything can happen. All we need to do is keep an open mind and never approach a problem with the notion that something is impossible to do. There is a solution for everything, it just takes time to find it. Plus, you don't have to break any laws (physics or otherwise) to get to a solution!

Science is something i love as well as science fiction its always kept me wondering what the future will bring, and yours is just as another, its good work and i'd like to think we might one day reach for the stars, till then i can only hope mankind on earth doesn't ruin it for itself.

I can only agree with you in all points! Let's hope we grow up, throw ridiculous things such as racism (doesn't exist biologically anyway) out of the window, and embrace our shared curiosity!

I'm currently making a story based on a worst case scenario based on human progression however i based it in MLP, my little pony (don't ask), but there's been a curious side of me about things that could possibly happen in real life. I'll give you a link if you're interested.

Very nicely done. I recognise the colony design & a couple of shuttles, tho the bottom right one with multiple wings looks interesting & unfamiliar...

It's called an "Ark Ship", I'm guessing in terms of "Noah's Ark". I think it's based on current space shuttle designs, but how official, or likely it is, I don't know. The wings certainly look a little odder than they really are, but that's the lighting...

Thank you. I'd say it's realistic lighting. While I love all the sci-fi sparkliness and lights, when going for realism it's all about light and darkness contrasts!

Thanks.
Whenever I'm not sure about shadows in space, I look at pictures taken on the moon. Even the guys from Mythbusters restaged the entire moon landing to debunk all those people that say that certain shadows wouldn't happen on the moon etc. and they do.
