Description

THANK YOU so much for my first DD! That was a nice surprise.
Thank you AFineWar for the suggestion, and alltheoriginalnames for the feature!
I very much appreciate it!

I usually make it a point to thank everyone individually, because I never take interest in my work - by anyone - for granted, but in this case it's just too much! Every single comment and is truly appreciated though! It means a lot.

The beginning of colonization efforts somewhere at the outer rim of our known universe. The ship designs are based in part on real NASA concepts, just as the Helios colony vessel.

COMPOSITION: Textured environment (starfield) and digital painting (planets, nebulae), composed in Photoshop. My work. Scene and lighting setup in Lightwave with final composition of all elements in Photoshop (including all FX).

MESHED: Helios Colony Vessel & Ark Ship by Jason Tinsley, Heavy Shuttle & X33 Shuttle by Kenny Mitchell.

Original size: 4500x1600.

Comments and critique welcome.

Thank you very much to TreeClimber for the valuable WIP input and suggestions!

The hardest part for producing artwork related to realistic near future is doing it in a powerful yet recognizable way. "Hard SF" technology must be depicted as an echo of our own, a balanced mix of present day tech and "fantastic" designs. After all, most of our current technology could be labeled as science fiction just a few decades ago. Your image captures the awe of the unknow with the vision of the future of people like Carl Sagan or Neil DeGreasse Tyson: a bright future ahead of us in the great ocean of space. The design is awesome, it has the "futuristic" quality that we all hope one day we can achieve, but retains the essence of the first years of space exploration. In fact, the idea is so powerful that makes you ask why people stop dreaming with the future. After all, without dreams, there is no way that visionaries could take us to the stars.
And what better dream that art?

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this awesome critique. You are quite true, it is all about having dreams and trying to turn them into reality. I have always considered myself a dreamer and since the other part of me, the realist, knows that, despite what some 80s TV shows used to proclaim, one man cannot make a difference on that scale, I'll just stick to art!

Maybe expressing hopes and dreams could make a difference one day if someone with that kind of influence is listening close enough. Or watching for that matter.

Is this to do with Elite Dangerous?

overseer In reply to FireswordDragon [2018-03-30 15:03:39 +0000 UTC]

Not at all. This was conceived and created long before Elite Dangerous was even started to be developed.

Or just the Elite franchise as a whole? I was introduced to the Elite games through Elite Dangerous. I'd say it's the best of the franchise. I guess I'm just nostalgic.

"Rest enough for the individual man - too much, and too soon - and we call it death. But for Man, no rest and no ending. He must go on, conquest beyond conquest. First this little planet with its winds and ways, and then all the laws of mind and matter that restrain him. Then the planets about him and at last out across immensity to the stars. And when he has conquered all the deeps of space and all the mysteries of time, still he will be beginning."

You certainly get those imaginations inhabitants of other dimensions and other planets with existing lives. I know you have a lot of talent in this kind of work, but if you believe in other people is certainly with the thoughts and ideas focused on this element type.

I've had some imaginations alike that when I woke up I did not want to return, are things that I do not know how to explain, but able to demonstrate in Art. But I do not have any tool to be able to express these views I have.

Great art though!

overseer In reply to Moraelyn [2013-03-21 16:45:03 +0000 UTC]

Sadly yes. The thing that's really crazy is that we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars every day to fund a war that is mainly based on the aquisition of resources; resources that are limited to this one, tiny world. If we'd invest the very same money in scientific research, to improve our space program, then we could make use of it commercially, for mining. Once other planet's resources can be used, local wars should no longer be necessary. But hey, who ever said that politics are a thing of logic?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Moraelyn In reply to overseer [2013-03-22 04:21:12 +0000 UTC]

Wars aren't just about resources though. That's an extremely limited view of them. War will be around as long as humans are. Hopefully it gets to be a very "few and far between" sort of thing though.

And hopefully governments fund science in the meantime.. lol

overseer In reply to Moraelyn [2013-03-22 15:53:23 +0000 UTC]

I'm talking more about current wars. Sure, it's not all about resources, but it's certainly more about mining rights than human rights. If we're really honest.

Also, I am quite suprised to see an other excellent artist getting a DD on an old design of mine...!
The Elios here was closely re-modeled from my own Explorer class many years ago... I still have it in my gallery!
Congratulation for the DD!

My friend, love this piece mood, composition and atmosphere. It's subject matter is fantastic. it is fun to look at. I know you are after a photoreal look so Colors can be pushed up. But a more saturated bluer band might bring to a more attractive piece. A transition color between a blue band and the shadow side of light desaturated purple might look great.
