Description
I wanted to do a close up of a ship (ended up with two) and a huge planet in the background. Took altogether about 36 hours of work (on and off), the lighting being the most tricky part of the entire piece.I wanted it to have the "Star Trek" feeling, so in the end I also applied a slight blue tinge to the picture.

Sentinel Mesh by Jonathan Wasik
Defiant Mesh by Skye Dodds & M. Christou
Background, Planet, Nebulae, Sun by me & 100% PS. Premodification planet texture thanks to NASA.
I've also enhanced the glow effects on the starships in PS postwork (e.g. nacelle/bussard/deflector glows etc.).

awesome pic! interesting choice for the secondary hull though; looks almost like the refit excelsior class hull, but smoother and more streamlined

Thank you. I had almost forgotten about this one. It's a non-canon design called Sentinel class. I think I put in the description who made it. And yes, it has a little of the Excelsior I guess, but also a combination of Intrepid and Sovereign classes.

I see the reg. # on the big ship, but what's the lady's name?

It is called U.S.S. Sentinel. It's a non-cannon ship a guy called Kataar built, however, it's very nice. Something between a Sovereign and Intrepid. You can find more about it here: [link]

I also design my own Star Trek ships! I have a new one called the USS Olathe, named after a city here in Kansas. She has an Excelsior-class saucer, a pair of wings sweeping up and back off the engine module, and a pair of Sovereign-class nacelles. Can you contact Kataar and have him build her for me? The reg. # is NCC-66061. THX!

Well, no, I can't. I don't know him personally and foundation3d.com is a website where modelers upload their finished public domain models if they wish to release them.
I don't create 3D models myself, I use the free ones that is available. If you would like to ask someone to build one for you (and I honestly doubt you will find someone, unless maybe it's a challenge) maybe register on foundation3d.com and post in their forums or ask around here on DA.
However, because I'm not interested in modeling, I'm not your man, nor do I know anyone who would. Sorry.

Dang! THX anyway, though; I would've liked to see a 3D model of her...

Well, like I said. Ask around. There are people on DA who model, maybe someone would be willing. Maybe try ~thefirstfleet or so...

I put together a story, if you like literature. This one's a riveting Star Trek story set in the alternate timeline created by JJ Abrams. Here's the link; hit it and drop me a comment.

Thanks.
No worries. No, it's not Voyager class (if you mean the Voyager from the TV show, she was Intrepid class by the way ). The ship is called "Sentinel" and it's a fan based design that was never shown in an official show on TV. I just liked it and used it.

welcome ^^
You should be, this could easly be the next Trek series (the blue tint does make it look like it is canon)

Thanks.
Although I thought I quite got the size right given the perspective. There is not really a reference (I am aware of) to specify the size of the non-canon Sentinel-class. The Defiant only has 4 decks after all.

They should bring up a new Star Trek series using this ship! It looks like an updated Voyager ship.. I love Voyager. >_<

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, it's a nice design. It would have also made a better looking Enterprise-E. I like Voyager, too. All started with TNG > DS9 > VOY. Voyager is a very sarcastic series, I especially like the Doctor. I have had a few good belly laughs during the course of the show!

Thank you, but I am not a modeler, I'm a designer. I enjoy doing scenes and putting together something that people will look at an say "hey, I recognize that, I've seen that". I need to get an instant feedback from work I do, I like to see exactly what I do and what it looks like. My modeling abilities are restricted to simple shapes and boolean objects, but thanks!

36 hours? Wow, that's a lot, but the image is just perfect. The lightning, the blue... it looks very professional. I'm not sure, but i think i know the Sentinel class from an fanfiction series called "Star Trek: Dragon"

overseer In reply to Damon1984 [2007-07-30 14:58:44 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Yeah it is a lot, but some of that is also render time. Rendering incl. lighting etc. took about 10-15 minutes each time and I have dual core CPU... oO I had to redo the lighting many times and add and shuffle light sources to get it just right.
And yes, spot on there! That's the ship. A couple of years ago now I was looking for a mesh of a Star Trek vessel that is not so canon, because creating pictures with canon starships means you have to always measure up to the original and there is always something that isn't quite right. Eventually I found the Sentinel, something remotely resembling the Sovereign class and I have to say I fell in love with it a little I've used it a few times before. For example in "Briar Patch".
