Description This image looks OK on my screen, but the color intensity, brightness and overall balance varies somewhat on the screens I have viewed this image on. Please keep that in mind when commenting!

Thank you very much to everyone who commented and ed this piece! I usually make it a point to thank people individually, because interest in my works means a lot, but unfortauntely I have very limited time at present! So thank you!!

I had a few requests use the updated Excelsior class again in one of my works, so I figured a drydock image would work well. So, here she is.

COMPOSITION: Scene setup and render in Lightwave with final composition (including all FX) in Photoshop.

MESHES: Drydock by Jason Tinsley, Excelsior-B by Scifi Art (LW conversion by Fabio Passaro), Nova class by Raul Mamoru (www.trekmeshes.ch), Danube class Runabout by Thomas Slanitz, IAV-106 Shuttle by Kenny Mitchell, Type-15 Shuttle by Staffan Norling (LW conversion by Ash Weaver), Regula Spacelab by Rick Snider, Workbee by H Gibbens, and Space workers by Gerard Duffy. Starfield, texture & geometry modifications by me.

My artworks are not endorsed, sponsored, or affiliated with CBS Studios Inc. or the "Star Trek" franchise. The Star Trek trademarks, logos, and related names are owned by CBS Studios Inc., and are used under "fair use" guidelines.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Single scene setup, 6 distant light sources (not including area and point lights), 4096px working resolution, 85 layers.

Comments and critique welcome.

Thank you to *TreeClimber for WIP suggestions!

Thank you for taking your time to write this critique. To answer your questions/points;

I did say which software I used in the description. I generally render my images using Lightwave 3D (9.3). The reason the image isn't available in higher resolution is simply due to people not respecting artworks. If you don't offer a higher resolution, people can't take it so easily and I don't want place a watermark all over it.

I am planning on creating a "detail view" of the image, so you will be able to zoom in.

The meshes can be found on sites such as "trekmeshes.ch" or "foundation3d.com". They are for Lightwave though and I do not know whether other formats exist.

I missed the software description, and can certainly accept the reason for the size, ah and yes i use models from those sites, again awesome render

Wow!

Would they really refit them again? Is that a more cost effective solution than a scratchbuilt new ship? (Genuine question, not a critisism)

overseer In reply to Evohunter7 [2013-05-17 20:49:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't see why not? It's a proven design which has served for many years and most deep space/explorer designs do have an intentional lifespan of over 100 years; that was the same for the Galaxy-class. If you create a completely new design, you never know whether there might be anything wrong and the technology has to prove itself. If you refit, you only have to keep an eye on a limited number of components.

This ship isn't my original idea/design, but it certainly makes sense to me.

Good point, I just wondered given how much the Excelsior Class was battered in the Dominion War. I for one feel that it and the B are two of the classiest designs in Trekdom. Only the Connie is better.

material continuum?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

overseer In reply to tonystardreamer [2013-05-16 15:57:51 +0000 UTC]

It was mentioned in a DS9 episode. Apparently the Ferengi believe in it. Like a great material river of opportunity that flows through the universe. If you "navigate its currents right", it will provide you with whatever you need. I think it was mentioned somewhere around the later seasons.

overseer In reply to Alkonium [2013-05-15 15:07:55 +0000 UTC]

The mesh is called "Excelsior-B", but frankly, to me it's just any ship. Wasn't my intention to tell a story with the picture other than what you see.

I need it in MAX format though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

overseer In reply to ArmandoCenturus [2013-05-15 16:35:09 +0000 UTC]

I only know of a Lightwave version. I'm not familiar with MAX, so I'm not sure if it could import the LWO format, or whether there is a conversion. You might be able to ask in the Foundation3D forums if someone has a MAX format for it.

ArmandoCenturus In reply to overseer [2013-05-15 16:37:51 +0000 UTC]

It was in MAX originally from my research, but I was never able to find it. There are people that know how to do LWO to MAX, but I have no luck with that, or vice versa.
