Do you work from a reference photograph? Any pencil sketching before the watercolor? I'm amazed at your work. You are a master.

Thank you very much, you are too nice!
I either work from life, if I have the time and the subject lends itself to it, or else from my own reference photos; I often use my camera as "sketchbook".
I do a rather detailed pencil sketch beforehand, on scrap paper. When I'm satisfied with my design, I transfer it to watercolour paper using a light box. That way, no sketching/ erasing/ damage to the paper surface.
Both the thistles and the yarrow were done using masking fluid.

I'm happy you enjoy them! Thanks a lot for all the
s!! I'm losing track here... there are more and more showing up.
I think the internet connection is dodgy - I'm using KK's laptop because mine has given up the ghost, and our internet and/ or DA have been acting weird lately.
So I hope you don't mind if I take this opportunity (before everything breaks down completely) to wish you and your "boys" Happy HOlidays and all the best for 2009!
Big !!!

holidays with the boys and the

Best regards also from K!

/oh wow, I'm a tad jealous you've got that nice paper. But you use it so well, stunning! The structural quality of the background is perfect.

Thanks!
You are right, the Saunders Waterford is a nice paper. There's only one problem: it is rather difficult to achieve good darks on it.

Couldn't resist teh first half of the comment... I guess many peoples idea of a watercolour is very airy and light, so dark colours are not as important. But I understand your problem. I always like your work however, low contrast or not.

Yes, it always does!
Actually, nearly all of my recent paintings are inspiration from one single afternoon's hike all around the lake in "New Countrywalks no.4". Only the hydrangeas and the sweet peas are from my garden.
Delighted you like this one too, many thanks for the !
