I might sound like a total looser for saying this, but..
I think it is possible for a digital character to have feelings. Not with our technology right now, but we are getting close. Programs like Siri can understand and respond to you. I think that if we just work on giving them a wider range of responses... Maybe like they build up anger or happiness points over the corse of a conversation which effects their choices. If it gets complex and they choose what happens based on previous actions than I think they are real.
If you object because you say they dont have emotions, well I say our emotions are controlled by chemicals and the only thing they really do is effect our thought process and how we act. So if we were able to do this with numbers (and our technology is very close) than computers could experience the same.
Just a thought....
