Description
Ok guys, this is my entry into =GH-MoNGo 's tutorial contest. I am by no means an expert on Oil pastels, and I only attempt to explains a few basic techniques. The best thing to do with oil pastels is to experiment - its an amazingly versatile medium. Can get messy though. As far as I know by my searches, this is the only oil pastel tutorial on deviantART.
Check out this site for further information. I haven't had a thorough look at it, but it seems to explain some more advanced techniques.

If you know any other sites with info on oil pastels , tell me so I can add to the list.

There were a few points on here that were interesting, but not enough to make me run out and buy oil pastels. I bet you know things that are really interesting, but don't realize what us poor art noobs don't know.

this is a cool thing you did there! i think it will help me to start..
dummy me thought one beautiful day as she was shopping 'hey! there are lying some nice oil pastels! and you neither tried oil nor pastels yet, so why not the comb?!' well.. that was not all too clever i guess.. it was two years ago! i did some meager tries but don't really know what to do with them.

Yeah, they are a bit tricky at first. You just have to make sure to lay it on thickly.

Is there any way to avoid the clumps of pastel that accumulate after a short while of colouring?
Or am I just pressing too hard?

Hm I get that sometimes, I just kind of brush it away, to be honest. Maybe try asking in the art scene forum.

You know what I first thought that yellow spot was?
And still do?

Not watercolors, pal.
