Sorry, I'm a huge history dork. They would rouge them to imply having been on their knees for a length of time and the rolled down stockings slapped of sexual activity too. It was a backlash to the repression of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. After WWI, women were given the opportunity to reclaim some autonomy and they jumped at it. That's actually the reason why the overall silhouette of the 1920s was so boxy and androgynous, it was a conscious effort to change what femininity meant.

It's funny how every time girls and women try to desexualise themselves, it simply makes them more sexy. The bob cut and tubular dresses of the 1920s were supposed to make them look boyish. Actually a girl can never pass herself off as a boy. The 20s flapper is always there, choosing glossy silk or flimsy chiffon, fluffy feathers or sensual furs.

Well, it wasn't that they were desexualizing themselves. They were reclaiming their own sexuality to regain some autonomy over their own bodies. It's no coincidence that the same oppressive powers that stripped them of autonomy during the Victorian and Edwardian periods would then take that sexual liberation and turn it into fetish: effectively turning their bodies, and their reclamation of them, into sex objects again.
And plenty of girls successfully passed themselves off as boys/became masculine back then but they were either ignored from history because it was their own business and no one cared or, more often, they didn't fit the sexualized narrative that society has always forced on women and that's a threat to the status quo.

Michelangelo's or Rembrandt's...

Be it mental, physical, artistic... the male of the species predominates in the 19th Century... The 1920s...
