They would rouge their knees, not powder them.

I stand corrected... rouge it is then.
I adore all the little fads and fashions in the 20s. Evidently some sophisticated US ladies had garters containing illegal booze flasks, coke, dainty little daggers and Derringer pistols...
Ahh..! so sweet!

Sorry, I'm a huge history dork. They would rouge them to imply having been on their knees for a length of time and the rolled down stockings slapped of sexual activity too. It was a backlash to the repression of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. After WWI, women were given the opportunity to reclaim some autonomy and they jumped at it. That's actually the reason why the overall silhouette of the 1920s was so boxy and androgynous, it was a conscious effort to change what femininity meant.

It's funny how every time girls and women try to desexualise themselves, it simply makes them more sexy. The bob cut and tubular dresses of the 1920s were supposed to make them look boyish. Actually a girl can never pass herself off as a boy. The 20s flapper is always there, choosing glossy silk or flimsy chiffon, fluffy feathers or sensual furs.

Well, it wasn't that they were desexualizing themselves. They were reclaiming their own sexuality to regain some autonomy over their own bodies. It's no coincidence that the same oppressive powers that stripped them of autonomy during the Victorian and Edwardian periods would then take that sexual liberation and turn it into fetish: effectively turning their bodies, and their reclamation of them, into sex objects again.
And plenty of girls successfully passed themselves off as boys/became masculine back then but they were either ignored from history because it was their own business and no one cared or, more often, they didn't fit the sexualized narrative that society has always forced on women and that's a threat to the status quo.

You have some fine points to make and you've made them well... However...
Men... I'm a man, so I feel qualified to represent my gender...
Men are essentially sexual animals, they'll paraphrase all the feminist propaganda to an ardent feminist audience... On the off-chance that said lady or ladies will take her panties down for him later...
Yes I know, we're despicable, penis obsessed creatures who deserve to be horse whipped by a gang of strict feminists...
But even then, the horse whipping feminist gang are flogging a dead horse... Pun intended...
because the lusty gent will be enjoying every exotic, erotic stroke.
I'm happy for ladies to have equality with us chaps... It's just that, when the get that head of whatever job they lust after...
they act like the insufferable male chauvinist pig they replaced... They become all bitter and twisted... Throwing their weight around and terrorising all and sundry.
In fact they don't fool anybody... I've been intimidated and even scared of a few violent male hard cases... But never by a woman, I always think... If it comes down to it, I can take her out in a heart beat.
Fact is, there aren't any, Mohamed Ali's or, Iron Mike Tyson's...
Albert Einstein's or Sigmund Freud's...
Michelangelo's or Rembrandt's...
Be it mental, physical, artistic... the male of the species predominates in the 19th Century... The 1920s...
or 2013... Live with it.

I was talking to somebody else?
If you have something to say, say it clearly and logically.
I can't relate to people who say nothing and when they do dare to speak... Say...
"Just stop!"

The male super star thing is meant to be tongue in cheek... A joke!
I wish to plead innocent to male chauvinist piggery your worshipfulness...
I like women, really I do... My mother was a woman.
