Description This was for a creative project in my History of Costume course about a year ago. I absolutely adored this class and this project. We had to combine costume history and our other academic interests so I set up my timeline as a sort of animation on a reflection of women's rights through history. Ancient Egypt through Greeks are both very submissive since women were given little to no rights then. In the Medieval times, women were slightly more elevated through religion because of a pious woman's relationship to the Virgin Mary, women saints, etc. Elizabeth I during the English Renaissance is the first to open her eyes and look forward to a more powerful role for women in society. The Georgian woman is turned away from progress but is looking ahead (since Humanism was gaining popularity but wasn't applied to women). The Crinoline period is what Americans consider the Frontier period as well which was a powerful time for pioneering women. In the Late Victorian era, women began to dress in styles inspired by men's clothing and it was becoming more acceptable for a woman to work. As much as I love the 50s, women definitely looked back at "the good ol' days" a little too fondly. Modern women are becoming so empowered that I had the final figure walk right off the page.
The figures are pencil, watercolor, and colored pencil and the background is metallic gold acrylic paint (stupid paige).

The scanner I was working with unfortunately did something weird to the image when it saved but given that the size is 11.5"x22" so it doesn't exactly fit on every scanner around.

I love this! It's one thing to make cute and visually appealing art, but it's quality just jumps if it has a great concept. This one is inspiring for women everywhere. The watercolor makes it feel simplistic yet elegant, and the added details on clothing and such just pop. I love all their poses too, as it flows generally well. In total, it's a great piece.

this is beautifully done and very well thought out!!!
I want to ask, are the characters cut-out and pasted onto the background?

Thanks! Yup, I cut away the background from the figures with an exacto blade before pasting it on another paper I painted metallic gold.

Mmm...empowered, you say? That's a new one for me. But, then, it's better than the alternative. Regardless, a great feminist piece and fashion piece both! And yes, femiNazis, you can be pretty and still be a feminist!

Thank you for complimenting my work but the idea that women are equal to men is a very new, very revolutionary idea in the grand scheme of thing so yes, I would say the modern woman is empowered. I have never in my life felt that I was any less capable than a man based on my gender and many of my female peers feel the same way. Sure, there is always a barrier in terms of societal, physical, or mental restrictions but that is purely a matter of individual attributes, not due to what genitalia I was born with.

Thanks for that femiNazis comment too, because enthusiastic(though sometimes misguided) women for fighting for their rights is TOTALLY on the same level of genocide. 9.9 Godwin's law strikes again.

Yeah, I agree, it's a lot better now. I'm just cynical, and frustrated that, especially when it comes to their representation in the media, there seems to still be this idea that women are a different species. The attempt to create a strong female character is frequently offset by the disappointing fact that, beyond being "empowered" (i.e. taking place in the main action a couple times), they have next to no personality. Plus, unless a story is expressly directed at girls, the protagonist is pretty much always female, and rarely anything less than gorgeous. I've spent a lot of time pondering the Disney princess franchise (which I also saw your lovely drawings for), and, presented as a set and individually, the focus is all on their dresses and how they found a boyfriend, even the assertive ones like Belle and Jasmine. Why is the assumption still, after all this time, that, unless it's pastel and ruffly, girls won't care about it? So that was really what I meant- empowerment is a new concept, like you said, and very weirdly defined in the last decade or so.
