Description
Riverbanks Zoo, Columbia, South Carolina, USAThe Siamang Monkey is native to the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The Siamang can live to around 40 years in captivity. While the illegal pet trade takes a toll on wild populations, the principal threat to the Siamang is habitat loss in both Indonesia and Malaysia. The palm oil production industry is clearing large swaths of forest, reducing the habitat of the Siamang, along with that of other species, such as the Sumatran Tiger.
The Siamang Monkey is Endangered according the the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

I don't think I've ever had palm oil chocolate, but if it tastes like crap, I would remember. I'll just stick to milk chocolate....And YES, what a waste.

The Cadburys chocolate here used to be made with milk and it was delicious. Then they changed it to palm oil and it tasted like shit and everyone complained - mainly because Orangutans were losing their homes due to palm oil being taken! It's crap Paige!

Love Cadbury chocolate, although their creame eggs are a bit too sweet. I can only eat 1/2 of one.
I know about the Orangutans and the deforestation of their habitat due to palm oil and commercial growth. It makes me sick to my stomach. They are threatened with extinction. I googled a bit of info: current counts at between 50,000-65,000 left and roughly 2,000 to 3,000 are killed each year on purpose. Much of the killing is done by villagers, who either felt threatened by the animals or killed for food, (can you imagine having THAT on your dinner plate?). Also, farmers kill them trying to prevent damage to their crops.
Humans are the most vile species on earth, imho.
We do not have any Orangutans at our local zoo, which is only about 2 miles from my house. Even though we do have other primates, such as Gorillas (which I LOVE to watch), but I do wish we had Orangutans. I have only see them once in person at a place called "Monkey Jungle" in Miami, Florida while living there. I must have watched them for an hour. They were one of the most beautiful animals I had ever seen.

Yeah I know what you mean Paige! They used to be lovely but the new recipe ones aren't that good!
It is very sad and, like you say, a lot of the killings are done by 'locals'! It's just so ignorant!
They are a beautiful animal and very gentle and it sucks that they are losing their homes!

Thanks so much, dearest Mal! And yes, Palm Oil is in high demand, but humans do not care about the destruction it takes to retain it. They have the same problem in South America. Many species suffer from deforestation for Palm oil as well. It's a very sad and greedy situation.

And sadly little will change - mankind does not want to know how the food is produced - they just want to buy what they like in the local store...

I so agree with you. I have been a vegetarian for almost 10 years because of how humans treat animals. I did start drinking almond milk, but real cheese is my downfall. I hope to be a vegan someday.

For many years Kenyan friends called me a meat eating vegetarian - for I was eating 90% veg and 10% meat.... I am not 100% vegetarian yet (yes my weakness is also cheese and sometimes eggs)... but I tend to eat fish rather than cow/sheep/pig/chicken.... doing my best and trying to find "interesting" alternatives....

Some vegetarians will eat eggs because they were never really animals, meaning they were never born. I only eat eggs when they are baked into something, like pies, cakes and cookies. If you only eat fish as a meat, then you are a pescatarian. Your heart loves you for that.
