He always promised he would be there for them. But most of all, her. He meant every word he said. He would always be anywhere she needed him, anywhere she was. Over the years, he kept that promise.

"Zuko, what if something bad happens to you?" Katara asked.

It was just supposed to be a routine check with the Earth Kingdom. Still, ever since the incident with Azula, Katara worried more for Zuko. She said it was because of her motherly instincts. Or the fact he saved her.

"Don't worry. I'll be fine." He attempted a smile. "I'm the Fire Lord. Besides, it's just over to the Earth Kingdom. You'll be plenty busy with Mai and Aang here." He held her tight to his heart, close to the scar he received a few years back.

"I know. I just..." Her hand moved down to the scar. "... worry about you since that day."

"I'm fine. Honest." He smiled. "I'll see you when I get back."

She walked along the gardens, waiting for him to return. She wanted him back. However, the one thing she wanted more than life itself, she couldn't have.

Days turned into weeks. And weeks into months. After two long agonizing months and no word, Katara tried to convince Aang to find Zuko. Something had to be wrong. She just knew it.

She rested against the tree he used to play on as a child. His picture remained there all these years.

By the time they found out, it was too late. His ship was destroyed by a storm-no survivors. Her heart ripped to pieces. She didn’t want to believe it. She couldn’t. He was Zuko. He couldn’t die.

“You always told me anywhere you were, I’d be there. I just never thought it would be like this.” A tear ran down her cheek. “I guess you were right though. Ever since that day, I’ve been dead without you.”

Iroh waited in the shadow with her son. Every year on this day she would come out to the garden. Each time running her fingers across his picture, wishing she was with him once more.

“Miss Katara…” Iroh started. He wasn’t sure what to say.

“Uncle… It’s been five years. And it hasn’t gotten any better.” She turned towards her son, holding him close to her.

“I don’t think it will.” He placed a hand on her shoulder, hoping to comfort her.

“Mommy, are you talking to daddy again?” Her son asked, his bright yellow eyes staring up at her.

“Yes, my love.” She nodded, stroking his hair.

“And he can still hear me, right?”

“Of course. He always told me he would be anywhere I was, with me forever.” She whipped a tear away from her eye. “Come on, let’s go back inside now.”

She paused a moment before following them. I wish you were still here Zuko. You would see your son. He’ll be five soon.

As she turned to leave, she could have sworn she heard a voice in the distance calling to her. But that was just her imagination. I’m with you Katara. Anywhere you are.
