Description
My AWESOME new horse Sapphirro! To me his name means Sapphire Man, sort of like Sapphira in the Eragon books. Isn't he DREAMY?His color is Blue Roan, Maximal Sabino with silver/black mane and tail and his eyes are blue! His breed is a Clydesdale! My VERY own Drum horse, YAY!
Trust me he is even MORE awesome in person! He is already every bit 16+ hands, I would even be willing to guess nearly 17 hh! And he won't be 3 until August!

May I use this photo in a powerpoint presentation on horse coat color genetics that is going to be presented to veterinarians? I would gladly credit you.

No Problem, if you have a site link to anything I'd like to see it...may I ask whay kind of coat color genetics you will be discussing? I think I might be interested what you have to say and what model(s) he is representing--I am an amateur genetics nut and I am always interested in learning things of this nature....in dogs, horses, cats etc, it might one day be useful to me.
Thank you for asking, and let me know if there is anything for me to look at.

Hi,
I don't have a site link at this point though the presentation is being given at Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine (www.vetmed.wsu.edu). I am in my final year there and this presentation is part of my senior thesis. I am conducting a survey on recognition of color genetics amongst horse vets today and then presenting my findings. I am an amateur genetics nut and have found the amount of correct recognition of coat colors amongst vets to be sorely lacking (even of genes with potential health issues such as lethal white overo and appaloosa). I was planning on using your photo as an example of sabino roaning in the powerpoint, which is on the basics of coat color genes. If you are interested in coat color genetics, I would recommend [link] (and the forum there). I am a moderator on that site and took many of the photos found there.
Is there a specific way you would like me to credit your work?

Just let people know what his name is, and that he belongs to me Shanna Stott, he was also a rescue horse if that would mean anything--he's a gelding. And I would have to agree with you, I think there are numerous Vets, both small animal and large that don't know much about coat color genetics and even some that can't identify a breed or possble breed mix so save their own skins! I have studied coat genetics on my own by reading numerous online sites for both dogs and horses, since my other horse Azure has so many ranges for her color--to me she looks like a siver maned or even silver gened Brabant--or even a Dilute Silver Buckskin, but where horse coat colors aren't quite my strong suit I have had people blatantly dismiss my thoughts---maybe you could shed some light? She's a mutt of a horse too, also a rescue. She's 1/2 Shire (mom was supposedly 100%) and my guess at dad was Shire, Quarter Horse and Brabant, maybe a few more in there...I have had people say that that much Shire makes it impossible for her to be a silver anything...but I only have a picture of her father, and none of her mother, so her mother could have been anything BUT a Shire or part shire....we love her no matter what, and we have two unique horses, that's for sure.

I also study a lot about dog colors, and my favorite dog dilution gene is the "blue gene", as you might notice with a handful of my dogs--Zairis the Heavily marked Blue Harlequin, Aurra-Vyda the Blue, Indy the Blue Eyed Harlequin, Zorro the Dark Blue, and Fang-Xuay the Blue Agouti Sable. Some day I think I would like a Blue Roan Horse, but we've got our hands full for now.
Good luck on your presentation! If you have any extra questions I have no problem answering!

Thanks again. I'll make sure to put all that in the photo credit. As to Azure, what I see definitely is a bay-based roan. I don't think silver is likely because of how dark the black points on her legs are. The silver gene would likely have diluted those out some. I do think that buckskin is a possibility though because of the color of her face and the frosting in her mane. You can get her genetically tested for $40 with a test that tells you almost all of the genes that have been identified if you want to tell for sure.

I agreed with some of what you thought...the only reason I think Silver is because her mane is silver colored, not golden or blonde-yellow. As for her legs and face, it's hard to capture sometimes but it is actually a dark chocolatey color, which over the season "frosts" at the tips to be a reddish chocolate. She's darker in winter and early summer and fades out until winter again. I would get her tested, but we'll have to wait until that time, I will let you know what she turns out to be, as she has confused a handful of people! Her rescuers called her the "palomino roan" because the light mane and tail and roaney look to the rest of her.

If you are interested in have her looked at by some experts in color identification, join the forum at [link] and post her pictures/links on the board. That will probably get you a lot more opinions.
