I can't get over the panel where Chapel gets his finger bit.  That's priceless.

Thanks! yes, part of the fun of drawing the character is being able to flip between him looking completely serious and dark to making a ridiculous facial expression.

I keep going back and looking at all of the little details in these pages, and the only thing I can think is, "Wow". I adore the movement and the way the panels are set up. The colors add nicely to the mood you have going on, and I really enjoy the way you drew the ice. Okay, I'll stop gushing now. Excellent set of pages. Can't wait to see more.

Aaa thank you! This was honestly one of my first times depicting ice and I can't say I'm too big a fan of it yet. Still adds mood!

Faeleena [2013-08-14 14:13:26 +0000 UTC]

Awesome. I'm learning a lot from your comics. I've been tryign to move away from being so depends on line work and coloring in the lines to a more painterly style like yours. I don't know why I never thought to use white lines, but I picked that up from you. Not that I'm going to do that in my comics. I don't know how you have time to do all this coloured art.

Palidoozy In reply to Faeleena [2013-08-14 20:39:14 +0000 UTC]

Haha it's funny you say that, because I actually decided to step more away from a painterly style to accommodate for the lines. A lot of my artwork was spent trying to develop a painterly style that could work with nice, big, black lines... But these styles directly conflict with each other in a lot of ways.

A lot of the white lines are from rim-lighting, and just neat lighting effects. Even though in that sort of environment the rim lighting wouldn't be THAT intense, it helps give a feeling of light to the forms? It's based on lighting and the environment, at least.

Notice how in the last two panels on page 4, the part of Chapel facing away from the elf have a white highlight... while the parts facing the elf are actually highlighted blue? The white/yellow light is coming from the sun peering over the wall, that's been established in panel 4 of page 3. The blue light is emanating from the ice itself. Though the ice isn't directly emitting light, ambient light sources are being filtered through the ice onto his face, which contrast with all the yellows/reds in the scene.

even though I can ramble a lot about lines, sometimes I just color the lines to look cool. But generally speaking there is a method to the madness. sometimes.

Glad I can offer stuff top pick up on!

Holy crap.. I think I need to spend some more time thinking about the lighting, but it's just too much work for one comic page in my current comic. Maybe my next comic, but this one is just too casual/lighthearted. I want it to be quick and simple to get down the whole comic making process--then dive into this other story I've been planning for a long time, with some experience on my back.

Palidoozy In reply to Faeleena [2013-08-15 05:20:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh dude, I totally sympathize/understand that. A lot of my previous comics were black in white, sketches, or not complicated at all because I wasn't confident enough with stories. These are the first comics I've done that I've considered 'complete.' Lighting is complicated, and while there's a lot of theory behind it, a lot of it is "what looks good."

If you're looking to learn more about lighting, I'd actually recommend the book by James Gurney, "Color and Light." He deals mostly with physical media/paint, but it's a REALLY good book for various types of coloring and lighting. www.amazon.com/Color-Light-Gui…
