Description
So I'm trying to create some new art for my final year as a participating alumni at the college's annual art sale. This is an in-progress shot of one of them. I enjoy pyrography (woodburning) on its own, as well as used in mixed media, so I figured I'd upload this separately from the final, whenever I'm done with it.This is FAR from being an original idea, but I like virtually all nature based concepts, so I wanted to see what a forest-bearing giant wild boar would look like. Or maybe those are bonsais on his back!
Either way is fine. I would love to see more wild boar in art around these parts (though folks like ~luve make up for some of the absence). Overall the animal is very under-appreciated. I don't understand, they're majestic and intelligent enough. And they're possibly more badass than most of your favorite predators will ever be!If that's not enough: The piglets!
Disclaimer: I love Studio Ghibli's "Princess Mononoke" as much as the next person, but comments along the lines of "OHMUGERD IT REMINDS ME OF PRINCESS MONONOKE!!11!$@!" won't be responded to. Sorry!

I'd say if anything, it reminds me of Karl Kerschl's work for The Abominalbe Charles Christopher. But that's mostly because I associate boards with his comic now. Excellent work, both on this and the owl. Lovely composition and line work! Well done.

I'd do a lot more, (if and when I find the free time) since they're kind of continuing the theme that I have going with "Autumnal" and "A Time Long Past." I enjoy harmonious fusions of nature/animal, as you know.
And the "ugly" critters need more love.

I really love how you draw boars. I have to agree that they are an under appreciated animal, and fierce as heck.
What do you use to burn this into the wood?

I think I'd love to draw more, especially with that unique head shape that they have. It's so... I dunno, relaxing to draw.
I am using a fairly standard wood burning tool, which I think I bought at a craft store. It has interchangeable tips for different line strokes. Shading can be a bit tricky: I think they could come up with a better tip/nib for it than the ones they have. They're a little scary to use if the one you're using has a kinked cord that can be easily disturbed, therefor causing it to move in unexpected ways. D:

I think if I had enough spare wood lying around with decent (very light) grain, it might be a cool medium for me to consider for future illustrations, if a publisher was ok with the idea. I think it'd be neat to see some new/unlikely tools being used in the market. Perhaps I'll use these pyrographic experiments as portfolio padding!

Definitely! I think it's such an unknown medium that people really need to be introduced to it more.
I've done one piece in the past, but it was crap. I've been wanting to try it again, though!

Wild boar are really neat critter for sure and this is definitely a great piece even though it's still a work in progress! I've never been able to get such fine details when woodburning, do you have fine (nibs?) for your woodburner or how do you get such delicate details without burning everything around it?

I have a couple of finer nibs on my woodburner: One is round and tapers to a sharp pencil like point, and the other is a sort of angled wedge that comes to a sharp, edged tip. The second only really works if I can keep the point steady without slanting the rest of the angled nib down (causing a really obvious dark straight line, which sucks). Also, light, fine grained woods work the best: I've had nice results with basswood, and I assume similar woods like birch would work well too. 
Someday I'd like a higher end woodburning tool with more variety in the nibs/tips. But this one works alright for now.

Aahh I've had this idea for a while that I too should draw some wild boars as well, because like you said, they're badass, they're the monster truck bulldozers of the forest XD (and I too imagined that people would be like "omgmononoke" xP)
I really like your depiction of the boar, it captures the features of boars that I like the most very well - their proportions and compact form, and the face, I love the face :3

They really know how to mess things up. There is a problem with wild Eurasian boars loose in (mostly) the easter half of the US, which is not so great. Regardless, still an incredible animal. (I also like anything with tusks, it seems)
Their faces are SO fun to draw once I started getting it right. I think I'll be drawing them more!

It's like a land version of the turtles with the islands on their back : ) Very beautiful! I remember trying to woodburn in middle school for our annual 6th grade market day. Failed miserably, haha.

It is quite a bit like those turtles. Woodburning is tricky, especially when you don't have the nib you want, or the wood is super grainy.

wood carving is insanely complicated in my eyes, even more nerve-wracking than drawing a final product with pen.
