Description Kids draw/paint/scribble blood on practically anything imaginable all of the time, so this probably won't be getting a filter on it.

Perhaps an explanation for this is necessary? I shall attempt to do so.

Given the fact that pallanophs live in what you could call a parallel universe that shares much in common with our own world, I'd been debating which species on this planet would be living alongside pallanophs in their world. Given the overwhelming popularity of wolves on this site (can anyone explain this phenomenon?) I was forced to wonder if they could feasibly coexist alongside pallanophs. I'd discussed this topic with a few friends and am beginning to think that, no, that would likely get messy, especially if there were to be a sudden shortage in prey. One must acknowledge that pallanophs are opportunists and very capable, so that if a hungry pack of wolves were to foolishly cross into a pallanoph's territory out of desperation, it would end quite badly. Just... run away, you woofs! And if you must stand against some lone pallanoph for whatever illogical reason, do make sure it's something smaller than the Andirg male in this scene.

For the record, since this comes up now and again, pallanophs are not intended to be related to canines of any sort. The concept amuses me, seeing as how I'm hardly capable of canine anatomy and it takes up more of my effort than it should, as you can see here. Ugh. (Then again, we don't ALL need to draw wolves, do we? I think not.) All the same, good practice, I suppose.

I like drawing fight scenes. Even if they don't make much sense.

Experimental piece: Derwent Graphitint pencils, soluble graphite, some sepia ink... in a very unfortunate sketchbook. It didn't like having this done to it at all.

This is a rough study, but if you see things you'd like to tell me about, by all means give a critique. All comments are welcome.

I've always thought the popularity of wolves has been a mixture of the animal itself and the community that's formed around it. Many people have made friends with others based on their wolf drawings, love of Balto or passion for wolves. Sort of like how a person's favourite band isn't just about the music but about meeting people with a common interest. *Shrug* That's how my mind makes sense of it anyway. It could also be that they just generally want to draw wolves and nothing else which doesn't bother me at all (I only really enjoy drawing dogs or scary things, but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate other animals just as much). What DOES bother me however is the crazy temperment of a lot of the 'wolfaboos' and their refusal to learn true facts about their favourite animal because they prefer to think of the idyllic version they prefer, or if they think only drawing wolves is okay if they want to be a proffesional artist.

... Anyway, this picture is AWESOME. The poses are fantastic, everything fits together so well it almost looks like a snapshot of a real battle. The shading and colouring are beautiful, and I find it very refreshing from the almost entirley digital art I keep seeing around nowadays. I -adore- the expressions of all the characters, I have a thing for toothy/snarly things so it makes me very happy despite the overall tone of the image. xP

Ah, you make a very good point.... your theory here is probably as close to the truth as we shall ever get. I myself went through a period of time where things I drew were exclusively deer based, bird oriented, or various manifestations of horses and the like, but now it's not nearly so overwhelming, because I'm older and seeking to become a bit more well rounded. (Failing still, but I try. ) I hope above all things that the "wolfaboos" grow out of the behavior before they turn 20. It's not so cute when one gets older.

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like it.

Amazing, especially since you said your Pallanophs are not intended to be related to canines of any sort. That was the first thing that popped in my mind. You are entirely capable of canine anatomy; the dynamic poses seen here in this drawing are screaming that fact. Well done.

Maybe I just need more practice, especially if I keep getting commissions for various canid critters. Usually when I draw a dog, it ends up looking like a pallanoph. Frustrating!

And thank you!

I've never understood the crazy obsession with wolves on this site, either. Wolves have always been my favorite animal, but I don't draw them as much as some others.

This is a really cool piece. The action and concept makes it really interesting and engaging

The amount of wolf art around here (and elsewhere, I assume) is staggering. I want to know what triggered it, or is it just like any long lasting trend, the origin is unplaceable? And the fact that some kids seem to be so deeply obsessed... further baffling. I'm not bashing wolves, I just don't understand fanaticism in general.

And thank you! Someday I'd like to try out a finished painting like this.

I think it must be a somewhat common thing to be drawn to the powerful and potentially dangerous species. Plenty of creatures seem to have held influences on humans throughout history.

HA! That image is even better. I can imagine this poor fellow being decked out with a big pink bow, despite the fact that pink would not be a good color for him.

It actually makes me sad to hear people talk badly about people who draw wolves.
Why do ppl get so aggervated?
Why is it wrong for people to love an animal? Why is it wrong for a person to draw their favorite species as much as you draw pallanoph's?
No, not everyone needs to draw wolves. Individuality is what makes you, you.

But if a bunch of ppl now love something that was once hated to extinction, why is that bad?
Granted some go a bit crazy, lol but loving is better than hating.
Id rather have what we have today, than what we had not even 50 years ago.

Sigh, plz dont jump me calling me a stupid wolfaboo for posting this. Lol.
It hurts to be quite frank.

I can understand that people are tired of seeing so much wolf art.
But people only post it because they love wolves.
Why hate something just because a large number like it?
Im not telling everyone to 'love' them either, but plz dont hate them.
Er.. im rabling sorry...
I hope im making sense without offending anyone... Just thought it should be said..

I wasn't insulting anyone so much as wondering what exactly has compelled so many people on this site (and off it, I assume) to develop such a specific obsession over this particular animal. Since I myself never went through a "wolf phase," I'm a little baffled. I know they have their roles in folklore and mythology and as such hold a place in the human psyche as a whole, but it seems to have reached a staggering new level as of late.

There is nothing wrong with liking something, but sometimes obsession can be, well... unhealthy. I'm not saying that is always the case. I myself am fond of "overrated" animals such as horses, birds, and deer, but am far from being obsessed with them. They are as flawed as any creature, and the same applies to wolves. That said, I don't hate wolves either. I'm just not drawn to them in the way others appear to be.

It'd be fair for anyone to state that I'm obsessed with my own species, but truthfully they're my brain children, so it makes sense I'd draw them often in order to make them work in my head. Thankfully, I'm the only one drawing them, so it'd be hard to flood the internet with them. (I'm pretty close to managing that task on my own, lol. Which is unfortunate. )

I'm not offended, so don't worry. I have very thick skin.

Thanks for not attacking me. Lol. (I really appreciate it.)
Yes i know what you mean. I agree, they are no different than any other animal.

I have to admit that yes, i am obsessed with them. Haha.
I dont think that its at the unhealthy level though.
And i think the majority of ppl who are 'obsessed' with them at what people would call an unhealthy level are mostly young 'tweens.' So they can get carried away in their fantasies lol.

As for others, well its just a matter of loving the animal.
And trying to know as much about them as possible.
So they draw them repeatedly, trying to perfect whatever image they want to project.
They are on their mind alot. Thats all.

As for the popularity, i honestly dont know. I remember when i was a kid everyone else either loved lions, horses, or dolphins as the most popular.
I've loved wolves as my favorite animal since age three.
So i wasnt influenced by anyone.
Im not sure about everyone else though.
Maybe its just the generation? Each new generation likes different things.
Years ago it was Elvis, now its wolves. XD lmao!

Im glad that not everyone is as into wolves. That would be boring.
You're art is interesting to me because you draw 'different' things entirely.
But i do enjoy wolf works too.
(sorry long posts. )

Yeah, personally I don't understand the wolf phenomenon, and it's not just dA. I like wolves, they're cool animals, but not the most impressive mammal in the world.
Regardless, this is an intresting pic! I don't think you'll get punished for no filter either, because it's not a lot of blood nor really gory. I like the movement of this, and how fierce the pallanoph looks while in combat. Poor little dogies. Yeah, the pallanoph really dwarfs them! I mean, I've seen the size compairisons, but geez.

It's like they've succeeded in flooding the internet... and beyond. I know they have their place in folklore and myth, but these days it's... well, to put it lightly, it seems over the top. Maybe I'm just saying this because I myself have never been obsessed with wolves. I don't dislike them, but they're just wolves.

I always anticipate an overreaction to anything, really, so I tend to put up disclaimers. I didn't think it looked too gory myself. But it'll get worse if the doggies don't run! (I SAID RUUUUNNNN!)

Hard to say why people idolize one species of animal. Especially since the majority of those who admire them tend to not have a lot of their facts straight. Though not all. I love wolves myself, but there is hardly a species out there that I don't love either, other then homo sapiens. I find it hard to dedicate a whole lot to any one species (except for horses. Having two as my companions I have a lot of inspiration and familiarity with them).

However this is really neat to see, it kind of puts an element of truth to the whole pallanoph concept.

Sure, I like some of the "popular" and "over-glorified" animals myself, but I don't dedicate my life to obsessing over them. There are interesting facets to all species, and most of my friends point out my interest in the strange as "kind of creepy." Insects fascinate me, for example: So something doesn't have to be majestic or "DAWW KYUTE!" to get my attention. Now, if only I could dig the pallanoph "cancer" out of my brain before I get accused of being obsessed with them! They're my brain children after all... and unruly attention whoring children at that!

Brain children are different though. They live and breathe only through your creativity. If you let that die, they die, especially when you haven't had a chance to share the details of their existence with others (books are forever ya know. XD)

Mantids are AMAZING. It would seem my parents have been finding them a lot as of late, so I envy them. I keep hoping to get lucky and find one in the bushes outside of my apartment building. Finding lots of spiders, though... it's a good thing I find them interesting instead of experiencing arachnophobic reactions like most.

You are right about the brain children, though. I just wish mine weren't so needy and stopped interfering when I have other work to do.

I don't care either way on the popularity of wolves; I like it when they're drawn well - or at least *textured* very well, as you have done here. Y'hardly notice the anatomical differences.

Action scenes are definitely made of WIN. I also like the effect of that soluble graphite with the texture worked back over the top of it.

I guess it's something I've never understood. They're.... everywhere! And there are some galleries that are filled with nothing but wolves. I mean, maybe I simply don't understand because I don't have an obsession with wolves, and it's like an outsider looking in. Or... something.

I need to do more action scenes, it makes me feel less stagnant.
