Description
Kids draw/paint/scribble blood on practically anything imaginable all of the time, so this probably won't be getting a filter on it.Perhaps an explanation for this is necessary? I shall attempt to do so.
Given the fact that pallanophs live in what you could call a parallel universe that shares much in common with our own world, I'd been debating which species on this planet would be living alongside pallanophs in their world. Given the overwhelming popularity of wolves on this site (can anyone explain this phenomenon?) I was forced to wonder if they could feasibly coexist alongside pallanophs. I'd discussed this topic with a few friends and am beginning to think that, no, that would likely get messy, especially if there were to be a sudden shortage in prey. One must acknowledge that pallanophs are opportunists and very capable, so that if a hungry pack of wolves were to foolishly cross into a pallanoph's territory out of desperation, it would end quite badly. Just... run away, you woofs! And if you must stand against some lone pallanoph for whatever illogical reason, do make sure it's something smaller than the Andirg male in this scene.
For the record, since this comes up now and again, pallanophs are not intended to be related to canines of any sort. The concept amuses me, seeing as how I'm hardly capable of canine anatomy and it takes up more of my effort than it should, as you can see here. Ugh. (Then again, we don't ALL need to draw wolves, do we? I think not.) All the same, good practice, I suppose.
I like drawing fight scenes. Even if they don't make much sense.
Experimental piece: Derwent Graphitint pencils, soluble graphite, some sepia ink... in a very unfortunate sketchbook. It didn't like having this done to it at all.
This is a rough study, but if you see things you'd like to tell me about, by all means give a critique. All comments are welcome.

this is just the best I hope it kills them all send in the greywolfaboos next I love how some of the comments are trying to justify what a wolf would really do or why people are so obsessed with them their wild animals they are unpredictable they attack and get killed by things all the time or not depends on what they do at that moment "THEIR SO SMERTS they'd never waste their energy! they'd live peacerferaly!" no...just no I saw wolves attack a bison bite his heels piss him off and guess what, two less shitty wolves in the world not to mention theres this place with old mine shafts the oh so intelligent wolves keep dropping dead in, quite literally their now extinct in that area or that time they were owned by a bear and a moose and etc. so yes they are stupid enough to do far more then waste time and energy stop comparing them to something more akin to an ape their not though I have to admit a wolf is far more intelligent then a greywolfaboo as for all this greywolfabooism it's all those shitty movies and stories ignorant shits take to heart I'd never let any child near I'd show them documentaries on animals to save them from becoming an :insertanimalhere:aboo I still watch animal documentaries all the time pisses my kid sister off XD she doesn't care for any particular animal I think it may have worked then early education does defeat the stupidity

I don't see why wolves would be going after pallanoph prey anyway, they aren't stupid. Lol Wolves and Hyenas typically won't waste energy on competing with larger/dangerous extremely aggressive predators like bears, lions, badgers or wolverines for it would cost them less energy to just run off and catch another bit of large prey or scavenge. If anything a pallanoph would come after their kill and they would just see if they can get keep it away long enough to get a fill and run or abandon all hope and just flee, that way conserving members and energy, wolves won't attack bears normally unless they really have no choice. Pallanophs are more likely to have competition from large predators that aren't as successful hunting like animals who can bully smaller group hunters away from kills. Bears. As such I don't understand why you say your bad at canine anatomy because actually your fairly decent at it, and as much as I try to see the pallanophs not as candid like creatures. But they are Equine-Canine-Cervidae-Llama creatures to me and very much most of their anatomy seems to have candid influence even if its not inteded, the body form of a stable endurance runner the common body type belonging to the all canine, the head has more equine in it but I can still feel the candid or even ursine of the Dog-type animal in the skull. Even in like history horse and wolves has some type of connection.
Again just my two scents, I otherwise like the piece, always loved browsing your traditional work, however I can understand why people would make the connection with canines, as such as im working on learning creature design and studying anatomy i try to study influences so, I do like the pallanoph concept.

No, I can't imagine they'd have a peaceful coexistence. Not in the North anyway, where they're likely to be competing for the same prey. It makes me wonder, what pressure do Pallanophs exert on other predators? Would they benefit from them (like bears do, scavenging wolf kills) or would they persecute them, like wolves do with foxes, coyotes and other mesopredators?

Run, wolfies, run! D:
You're right, though. I don't think wolves and pallanophs would be able to coexist, unless the wolves were either larger to be more of a match, or smaller, so they wouldn't be preying on the same species for food.

I love this piece!
This is actually the first artwork I have seen from you, Pallanoph, but I love them already. Your species are about as far from wolves as I have ever seen; the faces remind me somewhat of Chinese Dragons. Perhaps it is the elongated body too, but I love the Wolves expressions also - especially the wolf who just got his jaw dislocated and I presume the right side of his muzzle ripped off in the process!
For some reason the thing that springs to mind is a hormonal 'teenage' Pallanoph that the Wolves decided to pick on (or he/she was just suffering from teenage angst) and decided to take out the frustrations on the Wolves. Thats what I got the first time I looked at this picture!
Thanks,
Mabs :3

Ah, yes. I too have never understood the magic of flooding your gallery with wolves. I can't say that I hate the animal or anything, I just dislike the community that circles around them. Well, that part of the community who're obsessed with sparklewoofs and wolves who have some amazing powers and are immortal, stick some bat or angel wings to them. It hurts me from the inside to see stories and comics about them being all awesome and superior. I would lie if I'd say that I never went through the "wolf-phase" because I did. Honestly, I'm a bit ashamed of admitting it.
I believe that obsessions start when new members on dA or any other site run into other wolfaboo's and find out an anime "Wolf's Rain". I believe that's how it started for most people. I was swept away by that too and also WildSpiritWolf's drawings. I am really ashamed because of that but lately I realized that art might not be something that I want to do in my life or have it as an hobby.
Also, people might be drawing wolves because they believe that if they do it, they might get real popular in no time and without putting a lot of effort. And it's easier because if someone insults your work or anything you have a big back-up. There's a lot of "woof artists" out there who will stand up for you and bury the person who insulted or even gave good critique to your work six feet underground. It's kind of sad but amusing at the same time.
Ah, I have so much to say about this but I don't think it would be good to push it all over here in this comment box for this beautiful art over here.
I really like the action over here, when I saw the this drawing I could hear the Pallanoph's paw hitting the wolf's face and it's jaw giving off a bit of an cracking sound. I just wrote it and realized it sounds a tad bit strange, I apologize.
I also love what colours you decided for the wolves, it's beautiful, man.
Also, I should apologize to you because when I first saw this drawing over here I was really surprised that someone actually dared to draw something where the wolf is being owned. Then I read your description and right after it I went on searching in the comments for any wolfaboo's going on a rampage because of this drawing. I really apologize for this, man.

This type (Andir) have larger feet than most of the aforementioned pallanophs (except for the Russian type), but I think it's possible their paws may have changed to become ever so slightly larger. Also, the perspective here is ridiculous, so I'm sure his paws aren't as large as they look. I've been meaning to draw more paw studies of different types, with extended/contracted toes.

Interesting! It fits them actually very well! I personally have a bias for large feet ^^ I'm curious to see some more paws studies. Do pallanophs have retractile claws? I recently have decided to make the cheederian claws retractile as well. Before they had more cheetah like claws with extremely long fingers. I thought...hmm it looks somewhat uncomfortable to walk with such long fingers and it would destroy their claws. So the solution was to make them retractile like a true cat

I'm always torn on paw size for these guys, since they often seem too small or too big and... hell, I have a hard time achieving an all around balance of proportion. Which means, of course, that I'll continue to draw them entirely too often.
Pallanoph paws don't quite have retractable claws, but they do have an ability to fully extend their toes, which makes their paws appear rather handlike. I suppose that's very similar to having retractable claws, yes? I've been wanting to do some more in depth studies of this, and have only done a few brief sketches thus far. But as far as claws go, they do grow pretty rapidly, and individuals often prefer honing them down to fine points.
It does make sense that you chose a retractable claw for your species, though. Wouldn't want to ruin any claws!

Haha that problem sounds so familiar! First I made the claws of my cheederians retractile and now I'm thinking about making them less 'extraordinairy large'. However, I have to say...I really love the slightly larger feet of the current pallanophs compared to pallanophs from earlier drawings. I'm curious to see more details as it comes to paw anatomy. I have seen your most recent sketches in which the anatomy is already clearly visible, but I would love it to see how the underlaying bonestructure of their paws looks. Their paws are indeed pretty unique and more handlike than in most carnivores

I really like this concept! And finally somebody who dares to draw something not pro-wolf. I also get pretty annoyed by the immense popularity of wolves. I cannot the explain the cause of it but it seems that people seem to focus more and more only on wolves. All other four-legged slightly carnivore looking animals are called wolves. Even my clearly feline giant cat-panthera-cheetah hybrids are sometimes called wolves, even in my most recent works.
It seems that people see even links between pallanophs and wolves...which sounds totally stupid to me...that was hard to say... But yes I can say it pisses me off that the wolf-fan-invasion has such a skewed idea of how their favourite animal actually looks.
Do you mind if I maybe once use this concept as well? If I once again get frustrated by the wolf fandom I maybe have to draw my cheederians in fight with a wolf pack as well. Maybe just to make clear the anatomical differences between my big cats and wolves -.- Anyway, if I once find time to draw this idea I will refer to you for the idea of course!

I'm probably not in a position to talk when it comes to drawing certain critters too often... (I was known as "Horse Artist Girl" for part of my time at art college, HA!) but I did my best to try drawing all sorts of things... it's just that I was better at drawing some more than others. But... why does EVERYONE draw wolves? And why do they draw them ALL THE TIME? It would also seem that some people pull out the wolf drawing routine in hopes of getting popular here. Maybe I'm wrong, though.
I wish there was an answer!
To be honest, the closest canine connection pallanophs have in terms of anatomy is sighthounds: So borzoi, greyhounds, and the like had their role in inspiring their development. Pallanophs kind of evolved on their own from there; they have anatomical traits from horses, cats, and even humans. I'm still tempted to do a straight up comparison between them and wolves, and maybe some other animals.
By all means use this concept... Would love to see what you come up with!

Ha yes I see. I have heard from a friend that there is a whole bunch of horse-girls on DA that you don't want to meet as serious artist who sometimes draws horses...As for the wolf-fans. They are invasive and have a very strong bias, so yes I think you're right at right point. It indeed seems that people use wolf-art as a way to gain popularity or something...I have to say, I find wolves interesting and beautiful as well. However due to the idiot wolf fandom and the people who call my feline cheederian species wolves as well, I started to dislike the wolf on DA.
Anyway interesting to read how you have used several species as inspiration for the pallanoph. Yes I can see the anatomical features of those animals as well. Amazing how people are able to see wolves in your pallanophs Oo
Haha I will think about some cheederian & wolf art as well Just to compare or to let people know that I get sometimes a liiitle bit annoyed

'Noph feet are strangely satisfying and yet challenging to draw. The Andir type especially, what with those long toes! (I've drawn Sorstan in amusing poses just to practice. Might need to draw him doing jazz hands. )

I really like where this piece is going but in all the times you describe it I envisioned that (and perhaps this is a study for a later piece) you'd have a more "zoomed-out" view of the battle to give the overall scope of the power of a single 'noph and its body shape/size in comparison to the wolves. also would be a good way to work in a dynamic background where the wolves are trying to use the land to their advantage (high ground, an embankment, large stone, etc.) you know of course I think your work is great but I also know you appreciate it when people point things out for you to consider

This is absolutely fantastic, it's so wonderful seeing wolves getting a smackdown for once. Or am I just a bit harsh? As far as the 'wolf-mania' my theory is that wolves have always been popular in a variety of cultures all the way back for thousands of years, and have always been kind of iconic in one way or another; whether they be pure evil, or majestic spirit animals and all that. So I guess it just kind of exploded when it hit Deviantart?
One thing I must point out which is continually bothering me, at first glance you can tell that the middle wolf is about to get his face munched. Viewing further it becomes apparent that his face has been slashed and from an amateur perspective his jaw seems respectfully dislocated on the right side. What I don't get is how that slash occurred, since both the pallanoph's hand paw thingies seem rather clean and gore-free, along with the mouth.
Despite adding more gore I think adding some blood to at least the claws themselves will definitely strengthen the sense of movement within the image and provide a clearer picture of exactly what's happening in this canine-catastrophy.
Hope that made sense

Pretty good theory, I must admit... There's no doubt they're among the more iconic species (along with lions/big cats, horses, deer, and birds of prey) but the sheer volume of wolves and "pseudo-wolves" (AKA sparklewoofs/dogs) is mind numbing to me. I assume that this also has to do with the fact that people find they can fit into a community this way better, by sharing such an interest. Or something...
And you are definitely right about their needing to be blood on the pallanoph's left paw to show how the blow was dealt: I'm not sure if I simply forgot to add it or chickened out, but it makes sense to have the fur bloodied. (More gore=more epic, anyway!)
Makes perfect sense! Thanks very much!
