Description Here's the second of two large illustrations for the "Life of Pi" set that I did as class exercises. Take note that they have not been published... I wish, though!

The scene where Pi takes to sleeping in a makeshift hammock high up in the trees on the strange island, only to be wakened in the night by masses of meerkats swarming up the trees, including his!

The perspective on this was a real pain, and there are still plenty of places where it is "off." But like the other, this is quite old, from fall '06. Sorry to be bothering all of you with old work, but I thought some of you might be amused.

Pastels. 11x17 inches.

"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel. All intellectual properties belong to him.

Art (C) April Schumacher

wonderful. I love the novel, and the carnivorous island scene is one of the most terrifying moments of the novel and most interesting, because this is when you really start doubting if Pi is lying.

great use of perspective, by the way

I was looking through your galary and saw this picture and the one of Richard Parker bounding towards the meerkats, having not even seen the explination that these were from "Life of Pi" I immediately almost shouted "OMG LIFE OF PI!!!!" lol good work <3

Old work or not, I'm amazed! I think the perspective's fine, espicially in an angle like you've chosen. I love all the details and the colours. Just. Wow! It's amazing. I love this. Yet to have read the story but it sounds amusing. It looks like it too from what I see from your illustrations.

I'm almost contemptuous (though sadly not altogether surprised) of the fact that this has had so few favourites in comparison to many of your other pieces. Introduce a hint of intellectualism, and you can trust the dA mob to ignore it. Hmph! Feel ye my scorn, o, vacuous crowd...

Oh, I am a horrid creature...

Well, I love it, so there!!!

Oddly enough, my pastel work received the same sort of response in college that it does here: I'd bring the assignment out, and my teachers/fellow students would just kind of look at it, and then not say much. Perhaps it is lacking a certain something, but whatever that is, I'm not quite sure! (Glad to hear that you like it, at least!)

I am, however, rather pleased with the composition in this one! So there's a victory.

Silly dA crowd indeed!

Nope, it's not 'lacking' anything. People just need to be educated.

You are so remarkably generous about the mob (which is wonderful of you). I was once, but something gave up and fell ill in the face of constant stupidity. So 'silly' is insufficient a description for me. Ignorant philistines (on an art sharing site indeed, behold the painful, shocking irony!) would be nearer the mark.

It's not lacking? I thought maybe it needed more definition in places!

I try... sometimes I worry that I'm being too "wishy-washy" towards them! I can say that you have more to put up with than me in regards to the mob, so there's that. I think it helps knowing that I have a fair amount of people on here that I can have discussions with. Otherwise I would have been gone months ago!

Oh yes, and they ignore things all the time. A little indignation on my own behalf, oh dear... [link] Ah well, guess I can't win them all...

Let's see how long I last, I'd say six more months before I start howling!

And thank you!

I love how you conveyed the moonlit darkness with blues, very nice colours I would imagine night scenes are a pain to do.

They can be. But I love the desaturated colors and blues, so it's a very enjoyable challenge!

Hehe I remember this part too, where he describes how weird it feels to have them crawling all over him. Furry and scratchy, I think it was.
I like all the rich nighttime colors you worked into this one.

Thank you! I think I wanted to work on night scenes first when I started actually putting color into my work. Odd, you'd think I'd start off doing daytime scenes!

I think "furry and scratchy" sums them up pretty well!
