Description
Apologies for my lack of response, activity, etc. I've quite a lot on my list that needs doing soon, aside from the list of commissions. This is a piece that was done surprisingly quickly for the annual art sale held at my college (MCAD) each November. I didn't have any "leftovers" or other works that I felt could be sold, so I decided I'd get some painting done proper. Besides, somehow buyers know if a piece is old, and I've never sold old works. Odd.
I confess that, despite never having encountered one in real life, I love magpies. Such beautiful birds, and with such mischievous personalities! People tell me that my opinion of them might change if I had to deal with them on a day to day basis, though I'll counter that by saying I've dealt with some pretty loud and annoying birds myself. (Nesting colonies of grackles, anyone?)
For those of you who remember (not likely anyone, I don't think) I'll still be uploading my own magpie-like species at some point in the future... that is, once I have more important work finished/in progress!
This was painted on a cross section of basswood with acrylic ink (sepia), watercolor, and acrylics. The wood texture is... fun.

I tried to make these paintings a little less like the wildlife paintings you'd typically see... so I hope it works.
I've been captivated by magpies since I first saw them in photographs when I was a little girl. So sad I haven't encountered one in the real world yet! (It would help if I lived elsewhere, preferably further west!) They are such gorgeous birds, and I have a thing for corvids in general.

Yeah, we mostly just had Grackles out where I lived, and they... well, they have their own beauty I guess. Greenish sheen. Crows of unusual size >.>

Magpies, oh ye fiends of sane people. If only you didn't look so pretty. And stole shiny things and fur from my dogs butt. But I've gotten good revenge by scaring the crap out of you in return for you trying to steal my garden shinies.
I'm quite impressed with how you managed to catch the colours that hide in the magpies dark plumage so well.

Hahaha! Quite the troublemakers. I kind of wish I had bird antics to watch now.
And thank you! Most people are amazed when you point out the iridescence in a magpie's black feathers. They really are striking birds!

The first time I saw one, I thought that it had bathed in oily water. A while later, after seeing a few dozen and letting my childish head acknowledge to logic, I realized that yes. Magpies do have those amazing colours in the feathers naturally and not through nasty bathing habits.
And indeed they are striking birds. In more ways they one. xP

I love magpies too. Just the other day I thought, "man I haven't seen a magpie since I moved". Just yesterday I saw one. Made me quite happy.

They must know just when to pop up. I'd thought similar thoughts about not seeing woodpeckers for a while, and what do you know, I came within two feet of a female downy woodpecker outside of my apartment today. Gosh, they are so darned cute!
Still, I would love to encounter a magpie. I'd have better luck if I moved further west!

Aha. The power of wishful thinking.
That you should. Than we could meet!

Magpies are such pretty birds, but their raspy cawing can get annoying.

Oh wow, this is gorgeous. I adore magpies myself, and do deal with them on a regular basis. Takes a sense of humor to appreciate them, I think.

So I hear! Luckily I have that sort of humor, and a lifelong obsession with birds. I think I'd get along with them fairly well.
And thank you!

Loooove this. I love magpies too. I remember one time when I was little, a magpie flew down onto our back patio and stole some dog food right out of the bowl of a visiting friend's German Shepherds who were being fed out there. I think it irritated the adults, but I thought it was awesome. I love birds and bird-mischief too. Couldn't own parrots otherwise!

Thank you! Hehe, I always hear such wonderfully amusing tales involving magpies and their antics. It's a shame they don't live in these parts (the Midwest, I live in Minneapolis) as I'd love to see these lovely birds in person!
Yes, owning a parrot definitely attests to that!

I don't see them here in CA either. It was in Colorado where the dog food-stealing story happened.

This is extremely beautiful!!! I love that you combined these two elements to make something "from nature" -the wood, that is actually from nature, and then the beautifully painted magpie that is one of nature's children. This is...like I said - beautiful I cannot think of any other properly fitting word.
