Description So here we have part two of the sketchflood... More of the same that I couldn't fit in the first. Most of these are from work break doodle sessions, so even when I'm not at home, I get some sketching in. (I need to paint and finish things more, I know... *shame*)

So, some descriptions to make at least a bit of sense out of this.

1. Portrait studies of Skirdet king Orstad. 2. More of the magpie like corvids. At least you get a better idea of their markings here! 3. Sorstan from an impossible angle, one I rarely succeed in drawing. 4. More pallanoph skull studies, slightly refined, but still a project in progress. 5. Tjora! 6. Mirthond again, getting defensive. 7. No good in trying to take a pallanoph from behind, especially not an Andirg. 8. Random red stag... I need to draw more cervines, I know... this one was mostly from memory. 9. Sorstan is capable of showing emotion, but usually doesn't feel the need to. (Also: mulletnoph concept for lulz.) 10. Sorstan knows kung-fu. (I like standing him on his hind legs, he makes a good puppet.) 12. Sorstan may be an overbearing muse at times, but he makes for interesting (if mostly silent) company. 12. Tirlag and his human companion, a woodsman tentatively named Eberhard. He rescues Tirlag when he was young, so we see Old Eberhard and Young Eberhard. (And lawl, I've been told he slightly resembles Sean Bean as Eddard Stark from the Game of Thrones series... ) Also, we see Tirlag confiding in Tjora on the right. 13. Tjora and Nharath, hurrrr... 14. Tjardek somehow fighting himself, metaphorically? 15. Some more paw studies! They can extend their digits in a similar manner to retractable claws, but they stay compact in the rested state.

Whew... So this concludes our sketchflood, at least for now. Hope it wasn't too stressful!

hmm... These are fab as always but I've just had a weird deja vue feeling...

They remind me, a little, of The Beast from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast". Odd, I've been adoring your pallanophs for ages and I've only just had this thought.

I think it's the way they manage to be human like in expressions but all the fur and the padded hand/paws...

Your pallanophs are surely one of the most gorgeous and realistic creature I've seen!
Also, you are very talented for facial and body expression which is a great thing!
Every thing you draw amaze me.
Keep going!

Sorstan's expressions are surprisingly adorable. And I can't get over how pretty Nharath is. I don't know if this was on purpose or not, but he looks nearly as feminine as Tjora in that sketch!

And... yep. Tjardek is my favorite.

Thank you for sharing the sketches!

He's a charming ruffian when he wants to be, which is probably when no one is looking.

Haha! I often refer to Nharath as "Useless Prettyboy," but that only applies to his appearance. Though I've been noticing those two do look pretty similar. (Must fix! Tjora's face is narrow and finer, and Nharath's is broader.)

Tjardek needs more love from me again, as his reference has been started but has been put on hold due to commissions/etc. But that's probably for the better at the moment!

Thanks so much! I have difficulty with paws too, and am only just really beginning to understand them. It helps that I now have a wonderful book on animal anatomy to consult!

You draw paws with such amazing dimension! Paws are so frustrating for me, I simply CANNOT draw them, especially pallanoph paws.
The paws you draw are so detailed, and proportioned correctly at the same time.... I end up making them WAY too big, because I'm focused on making them look right. o.O

I know I already mentioned this somewhere, but your fighting pallanophs remind me of Chinese dragons. By that I mean their fierce looking faces.

Ah yes, I do recall you saying so... Probably one of many messages I forgot to reply to. *d'oh!* And I totally see the resemblance, and since I also LOVED drawing oriental dragons when I was younger, it's quite possible that influence is showing through very strongly. Interesting! I wouldn't have noticed had you not said so.

Your style would suit science books. Or..story books
Dunno which, but it's wonderful, lovely! Your creature is a so well-made- mix that it's a species on it's own. No need to identify it as many. Good job!

What I love most about your species is just how believable and real they are, something that many other original species lack. they may be original, but that doesn't meant that they're believable. You've achieved both with your pallanophs Original and realistic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Kqeina [2011-09-29 09:14:29 +0000 UTC]

I've had my fair share of "far fetched" species when I was younger (some of them are still around, but in modified ways!) so I've been there, too. The more I observed real species, the more I learned, and the more I applied to the pallanophs' design. I'm just glad to hear they're finally feeling real. So thank you very much!

They seem humanly intelligent, BIG O__O, strong, and they have lots of claws and teeth, plus they look quite agile.
Loving them more and more.

pallanoph In reply to mysteriouswhitewolf [2011-09-29 09:10:56 +0000 UTC]

They are a bit scary, but luckily they're pretty reasonable and don't attack unless provoked, so they get along with anything that wishes to avoid them and give them space. Some are friendlier than others, but others it's just best to keep away from.

Oh man, so awesome. I can only aspire to this level of sketching at this point.. despite years of design school and all those drawing classes my skills have seriously atrophied and I still suck at animal anatomy.

Please post sketches like this all the time - they are wonderful.

Also the depth of the pallanoph species development is crazy - I have my own little bestiary for my writings but I don't really work on it very hard.. guhhh.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Aetharius [2011-09-29 08:56:50 +0000 UTC]

Part of me gets annoyed that I seem only capable of sketching and never have the discipline to see something through to the end... makes it hard to be productive! (And no, you do not suck at animal anatomy!!!! )

I need to sketch a wider variety of things. Like people. And maybe interesting plants, trees, landscapes... and peoples' animals or whatnot. I draw from my head too often!

I spend too much time in the pallanoph department of my head, which is why they've evolved so much. But I guess it's better to see them changing than them staying perpetually the same.

And... thank you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aetharius In reply to pallanoph [2011-09-30 03:35:50 +0000 UTC]

No problem!

But hey, at least your sketches are complete enough to be perfectly comprehensible and are not just a pile of lines and scribbles.

I have the same problem - I draw from my own head way too much and lose sight of how animals are actually proportioned and whatnot (even the ones on which my own creatures are based).

I've used reference photos before with great results, but I'm lazy so I don't bother, and I should.

Time to hit the natural history museum.. and I live a 20 minute walk away so I have no excuses, really.

Anywho, keep up the awesome work! I always get super excited when your stuff shows up in my watch.

I really love your anatomy. It is unlike anything I have ever seen, they are canine like, yet also not unlike a primate in some ways. I just can't help but think of a carnivorous sheep in some forms for their head. Very unique creatures, so they can stand and walk on two legs? Or more like a bear and just hobble?
