Description First off. The format may be irritating, but I rather like it.

Here is an example of what a fight might look like between two males of Southeastern type : [link] Fights rarely occur, as this type tends to be pacifist in nature and do not often intrude upon each other. However, depending on the nature of the circumstance, they can fight quite seriously: If one of the two does not appropriately respond to the other during a meeting (ie: the intruding male fails to perform the submissive bow and/or displays his crest in a threat, or engages in other disrespectful acts) this is grounds for a fight. Especially if the intruder refuses to act appropriately after an exchange of words. (Yes. They speak.) If all attempts to divert the conflict fail, they will both rear and scream battle cries, displaying crests and showing the ear patches, as well as lifting the ridge of hair along the spine.
In less serious incidents, the two may exchange blows to the face, neck, and chest, and may butt heads until one decides it is not worth it. This example is a more serious case... involving blows with all four feet, blows to the abdomen, and lunges for one another's faces. They are capable of leaping very high, and during these they will lock forelegs around each others necks for purchase and dig into each others bellies with their hind feet, striving to knock the wind out of one another. Whoever remains on their feet for the landing will likely be the victor. Don't worry, once he has submitted properly the victor will let him go free.

These little sketches are shown at a little smaller than actual size. I found one of my brush pens the other day, a Japanese one that clearly cost me a pretty penny. It works absolutely beautifully... the only thing I worry about is finding cartridges for it once it runs out of them!

I've been uploading far too much of this sort of thing lately. I apologize...

Of course, comments, critiques, questions, what have you are always welcome.

Pallanoph species and design (C) April Schumacher.

It's very rare that people ever get in to the finer nuances of creature creation. It's usually "OMG stick wings on it!" Additionally, the more violence, the better, in many cases, despite most natural fights being %90 display and rarely resulting in fatal wounds.
So kudos to you! I like these guys! I'd watch a nature documentary on them.

Words cannot describe how much I love this!!!

Ever since you mentioned (in one of your journals, I think it was) that you were working on drawing a Pallanoph fighting sequence, I have been absolutely DYING to see this!!!!!!!!

I have to say how wonderfully well-thought-out your Pallanophs are! Everything from their anatomy (which is stunning!) and behavior, to their habitats and diet, are so convincingly realistic that I can't help but believe they actually exist!
If ever I'm on a nature walk, I keep thinking I'll inadvertently bump into one! No, seriously, I do!

Oy, long comment...
Sorry... obsessed fan here.
(So much for "words cannot describe". )

Oh gee, thank you! I'd really like to do more of these with different types and their different fighting styles. It would be excellent practice!

I keep hoping one will show up, too, to be honest...

And it's good to know that these guys have fans!

I'm really glad to hear that they're becoming more realistic with each one of these little sketches! There's still so much about them that I need to get down on paper.

Thanks for posting them, I love it! It very much reminds me of the old English lion and the unicorn poem with the original ink illustrations!

Gee, thanks!

For whatever reason, I seem to be unaware of said poem! It sounds really beautiful! (wonders about all the other illustrations she missed out on when she was younger...)

Of course, I can not find a full e-book on it now -.- But I found a couple of the illustrations in google images:

[link]

[link]

"The Lion and the Unicorn poem

The lion and the unicorn were fighting for the crown
The lion beat the unicorn all around the town.
Some gave them white bread, and some gave them brown;
Some gave them plum cake and drummed them out of town"

I probably only know of it bc my grandmother is from Wales

If you ever read Alice in Wonderland this is why the lion and unicorn in that book were sharing a cake.

Oh wow, thanks for showing those to me! I think I vaguely remember something similar now... shame about all those older stories being forgotten and all. Makes me glad that my older cousins gave us old storybook collections...

Now if only my memory were better!

These sketches remind me how awesome their tails look! Haha, great victorious strut in the last example too

They do look like him, don't they? Uh oh, now I'm worried they'll end up turning out all looking alike!

Tails are win! His strut is pretty amusing: "You've been vanquished! But... I'm generous, so I'll let you live." Loser: "Waaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh there goes my manly pride, waaaaahhhh! "

Maybe their pelt colours differ slightly? I'm sure they would look clearly distinguishable as larger sketches or in colour

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to line-melte [2009-07-13 17:28:02 +0000 UTC]

Sure did! These started out as quick gesture studies in pencil to get the poses and flow down, then I overlaid with more detailed anatomy and worked things out until they were more solid. Then I got the magic brush pen out.

I can't quite do things like this straight with the pen, yet... Someday, maybe.

umbbe [2009-07-12 18:53:28 +0000 UTC]

Do they fight ritually first? It didn't come out quite clearly from your description, but I presume they do. You could sometime draw their ritualistic fights too, as this seems like a serious fight with intent to harm or kill. ;3

Still, it looks realistic.~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to umbbe [2009-07-14 16:48:39 +0000 UTC]

They normally just greet each other respectfully when they encounter one another, but if one fails to do so or acts aggressively, they will rear and do their battle cries. Less serious fights are brief scuffles. Most fights end with no serious injuries... just minor cuts and wounded pride.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

umbbe In reply to pallanoph [2009-07-14 17:34:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I guess that's enough avoiding getting hurt, eh? ;D
But if I dare say... Even most fights shouldn't even hurt the participants. A minor cut may get infected and harm their hunting/escaping from predators. A fight with no possibility to harm (like giraffes just hit lightly their necks against each other, or komodo lizards wrestle)
For example, I could imagine the pallanophs slamming their bodies against each other lightly.

Just something to think about.

Charanty [2009-07-12 18:26:40 +0000 UTC]

So as far as i understood they don't fight to death (exept for some rare cases)?
Also, do they fight to get attention of females? Or they got other ways in this question?

pallanoph In reply to Charanty [2009-07-14 16:44:26 +0000 UTC]

Fights to the death are extremely rare.

They don't fight to get females' attention, but do displays instead. I ought to do an example of the dances they do together...

Hmm... This kinda made me wonder... Even though the Southeastern type rarely fights, doesn't there exist any "illness" that would make them more aggressive? Like rabies among dogs?

And wonderful work as always! ^^ I wouldn't mind seeing more of this
