Description So I decided to pound this out while I had everything else in the works. Too many commissions, professional work, and other things to handle at the moment, so please forgive me if I seem like I'm ignoring you. (I'm not.)

This particular character reference is relevant if you're interested in entering the second theme of my contest (look at my most recent journals for more information!). That is, if anyone is even remotely interested. HA.

If nothing else, we finally get to see what Reivig looks like, in proper color and everything. He's a good example of what most pallanophs of the Teirn tribe tend to look like: A bit shorter, stockier, and of varying brown tones. The dark hackles along the neck and back are a trademark of that tribe. He makes a pretty good contrast in character and appearance to his "assassin brother-in-arms," Sorstan. It's a pity I haven't drawn more of this stubborn fellow, but I'm sure those days are yet to come.
(You might be amused to know that I had to enlarge his eentsy weensy pinhead in Photoshop. It looked fine when I sketched it, but I saw once I progressed to color that it definitely wasn't right. He does have a slightly smallish head, though.) His paws are also a bit large for a Teirn. Etc.

Derwent colored pencils (studio, artists, and coloursoft) as well as a few traces of Prismacolor/Caran d' Ache Supracolor (hard to beat their opaque whites!) on Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper. My working size is roughly 9 x 12".

Comments, critiques, questions, etc. are welcome.

Character, pallanoph species, and art Β© April Schumacher. Please do not utilize for your own purposes. Thank you.

Hi there, I'm looking for someone who can design me a Syrian Hamolf (Syrian Hamster/Wolf hybrid) creature. It doesn't need to be colourd als long as it is obvious what it is going to look like about shaping and such ^^ I give you artistic freedom for this. I'm willing to pay for it if you'd like.

Good opaque whites are a real gift. I often find white coloured pencils never quite opaque enough and have to employ the addition of ContΓ© or gouache. Derwent's white from their Drawing range is very good though. I forget what the Coloursoft one is like, though I expect it must be equally good.

They are indeed hard to find... Derwent's Coloursoft white is a bit more opaque and layers better than their original ones, but it doesn't quite match the Prismacolor or Caran d'Ache white, which surprises me. Of course, I'd only use those for final bright highlights, because they don't really accept additional layering.

(And I need to catch up on your latest deviations! My brain is even more of a mess now than it is usually. Stupid emotions, augh! )

I wouldn't worry about the latest from me, they are mostly silly or mediocre -- or both.

I'm having stupid emotions too (heartily sick of them now), so I understand very well about messy brain.

Nonsense!!!!! I could argue with you on that all day, but I won't... Besides, your latest works have been making me smile despite the emotional sludge I'm in. I just need to pull myself together, is all..

I hope you feel better very soon, Niroot... Even though that's easier said than done!

I hope you feel better soon too, April. I'm very glad my silly stuff has made you smile a little; it didn't all go for naught in that case.

I shall be willing you through your sludge as I try (vainly) to haul myself through mine. >_<

Thank you very much! But hey, you seem to have a good grasp on digital painting techniques, which is something I wish I was halfway proficient at.

How long have you been developing this breed for?

pallanoph In reply to Dioko [2011-07-28 03:30:48 +0000 UTC]

I've had them in one form or another (they've gone through some drastic evolutions) for almost entirely too long... I think I've had them for 16 years? Still can't quite get them out of my head, though they're an entertaining project to keep me occupied, no doubt.

You've done a fabulous job on them! It's cool that they've been with you so long too. The time you've spent on them really shows.

Aww, I'm sure that now he has a colour reference perhaps he shall get more love.
I know how that feels though - some of my favourite designs in my head don't even have coloured drawings of them. Oh, the shame!

pallanoph In reply to wulf-demon [2011-07-20 05:57:46 +0000 UTC]

Multiple shades of brown and cream, though one could always simplify. I myself am not capable of doing so.

I just can't color or shade anything, my color blindness prevents me from doing so.

I'm interested in the contest, but I'm not remotely good enough to try and compete, so I'm content with watching while I sketch out stuff. lol <3
