Description
Oh look. Something without a background, again.I promise you I'm still capable of drawing other things. I think.
*ahem* Here he is at last, in color! Overall, he's lighter and more reddish than my character Nott, whose reference also needs updating (
Some notes on his appearance: (because they are conveniently missing from this sheet.
Neng sports several scars; the most prominent of which can be found on his muzzle. Another slightly less noticeable set can be found on his groin, marking him as sterile, as he was attacked at a young age by a half blind, crippled female pallanoph of the Chinese crested type. This had an obvious effect on his appearance: he developed a lean, spare muscled, angular build and his finer hair resulted in a flatter crest. (Many of you know this already, but I thought I'd explain for any newcomers.)
Speaking of crests, yes, it is a crest, with a sort of "cowlick" that results in a forelock. Not just "hair," so to speak. Its purpose, along with the ear tassels and facial/ear markings, is display.
That's all I can think of, for now... but I'll make an attempt to answer any questions you might have.

Once again - lovely! I had never made the connection before, but is Nng (and possibly some of the others) referenced from the real-life Maned Wolf?

Thank you!
Ahh, I can see where you might think that... though in all honesty, I didn't have maned wolves in mind while originally creating him: I do think I thought of Siamese cats and saluki dogs at one point or another, though! (And possibly the Akhal teke breed of horse, because I love them so!)

Ah! How i've missed keeping up to date with your uploads!
And a colour reference of Neng is such a joy to see... and in coloured pencils!
Stunning work as always (and as always I can't seem to get over how beautiful pallanoph tails are )

Waaaghaghaga! (I've missed you on here!)
Neng + colored pencils = It was also nice to color something smooth coated for once!
I do love his tail in particular... I can imagine the horror of one losing their tail in an accident!

Likewise I need to improve my time management so I can keep up with DA... and also finally get around to finishing that Nharath picture I've had to put to the side for months
Haha, I'm sure it would be quite distressing!

Ohhhh, time management is the trickiest thing in the world for me. One of these days I'm going to learn my lesson.
Eeeeeeeeee! Ohmygoodness Nharath arts! I need to do some birthday arts for you... so you should tell me what you'd like or I'll make it a surprise.

Really?! (funnily enough I acrually intended for the Nharath picture to be done for your birthday- How delayed it became!
)
Surprises are always great
I was actually thinking of drawing up some new references for you for another commission sometime (though I can see you have quite a list so let me know if you'ld like me to hold-off for a bit )

I rarely manage to finish things on time (as you already know! ) so I'm crossing my fingers that I manage to come up with something for you in a reasonable amount of time! It's just a matter of deciding what to do. Of course, you could make some suggestions.
Eee! I have to remind myself to get my butt in gear and finish some of those commissions... I have some projects off dA that are going on right now and they remind me how I need to work on time management. I've been soooo tired though...
I'll likely be less busy in a few more months. I hope! *runs around in circles*

And hopefully some work on Nharath

My dear, do I love these species. Beautiful.
Also I like the way you do your character reference's. Not just scribble a creature and then splash on some color as we usually see character reference's around devART but you do them neatly just like you do all of your drawings. Professionally, may I add.
Beautiful work C:

Thank you very much! I like to make these character sheets clear not only for others to see, but for my own reference as well.
So I like to make sure each character is presented somewhat realistically!

What an awesome colouring work, detailed and with direct realistic colours, and that with pencil!...I'm very bad in handling pencils because I always tend to create a mess...
Poor Neng as it comes to his background...I hope his infertility doesn't touch his ego to much? Compared to your other male pallanophs he is indeed in a way less robust.

pallanoph In reply to FelisGlacialis [2010-08-28 22:03:01 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! It's been really nice to get back into colored pencil for detailed pieces like this... a lot easier to see!
As far as Neng's ego, well, since he was fairly young when it happened, he's learned to live with the effects and as a result has no interest in breeding. He is, however, very needy of close friendships.
He's quite the bony fellow.

FelisGlacialis In reply to pallanoph [2010-09-01 21:02:14 +0000 UTC]
haha yeah understandable! I'm also a detaillist...especially with ballpoints. Coloured pencils often end up in a blended mess
Indeed pretty logical that he doesn't have motivation and interest for breeding anymore. He probably doesn't feel what he has to miss? Interesting how his anatomy differs from most other pallanophs.

Eeeeeee! I really can't decide... currently I'd be torn between either dear Neng or Tjora. But aaugugh, Tjora's crazy colors... though they could be simplified! Which would you rather make?

Ashzoi In reply to pallanoph [2010-08-22 01:35:24 +0000 UTC]
Ooh! Tjora would be mighty fun. I'd probably have to use some water based dyes to get her fur the right color pattern (I doubt I can find faux fur fabric that will do the trick). I don't really have a preference XD

Well, if you think Tjora would be fun... But really, I love both of them equally. Whatever you think would be less of a pain! Unless you want that sort of crazy challenge.
Gaaaaah lovelovelovelove!

Well draw it and put a warning on it. If your watchers decide to click past the warning then they shouldnt object. I for one would be interested in seeing it.

What a beauty! You have such a deft touch with coloured pencils. Do you draw straight onto the paper,or transfer the drawing first?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pallanoph In reply to echdhu [2010-08-22 01:00:06 +0000 UTC]
I draw straight onto the paper... which is a pain when the surface is colored, as you often can't see the graphite lines, and they are also reflecting the light in confusing ways! Probably my least favorite part of the process, I'll admit.

echdhu In reply to pallanoph [2010-08-22 18:22:42 +0000 UTC]
God,you're brave!...Canson is a devil to erase pencil from. Still,I suppose you're very familiar with your Pallanoph's physique Ever have to start from scratch?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pallanoph In reply to echdhu [2010-08-28 21:54:36 +0000 UTC]
I usually just start drawing right on the paper without much of anything to go off of aside from "draw him in profile!" I can't tell you how many times I've had to start these things over (from the pencil sketch, that is.) Luckily I can manage alright once the color goes on, but since I work so slowly it's easy to spot a small mistake before it becomes a big one!
