Description
This is the first time my pallanoph character Tjora has ever appeared in color, I'll have you know.Initially this was meant to only be a quick color study in Painter to see if the tones I had in mind would look fine. The dark "stockings" were a recent addition, so I decided to try it out.
I've probably missed something, though most of the info can be found on this ref. Let me know what you all think!

I just can't stop staring at this, it's so beautiful! Tjora's coat has the most amazing colour scheme. I love her legs in particular. I've always been fond of legs with light on the back and dark above, and that spot on her hock makes these extra special. Plus I can't get over how perfect the anatomy of your pallanophs' legs and paws always looks. I could go on for ages about the strokes in her fur, and those colour highlights, but I think you get the idea... I love this painting.

really great job on the fur and color, she looks very natural in the shade and subtle color variations of her fur and very lady-esque, its exactly the right mixture of well groomed and yet natural look. With that I mean I feel like I could touch her an feel the fur.

Thanks very much! Exactly everything I was going for, so I'm very glad to hear you can see it!
It was definitely a challenge to keep her from looking too "polished", though.

I definitely thought of antelope/goat coat patterns after adding her "stockings." I'm a huge fan of that too, so it all works out.

Such a basic pose... you have ruined me with all the dynamic sketches and works you've posted!
I just looove all the chocolaty colours (seriously. They're all like off from different chocolate bars!) you used and for some reason her manes look like what I'd imagine YOUR HAIR LOOKING LIKE. Seriously weird thought, I know.
You mentioned the ears being small, but they seem to be pretty far back on her skull? Also she is quite bony by built, I wonder if she should be a tad bit more to the muscular direction, especially if she is the constantly moving etc type, so I'd imagine she would be quite fit from such.
I saw this earlier on your LJ and was gonna complain but then I noticed you posted here too! Good girl

pallanoph In reply to kalmanen [2010-04-27 08:23:40 +0000 UTC]
I knowwwwwwwwww! *wailing*
And speaking of poses/anatomy, oh gosh I can't seem to properly plot poses/anatomy to save my life on a tablet. Especially since Painter gets irritable about painting on top of a scanned in sketch, augh. So! That said, you are quite right about her build being a bit bony here, and her ears being too far back. Which I realize I could probably fix easier in Photoshop. Yesss.
And your mention of her mane looking like my hair: I have to admit, you're not that far off with that guess. Maybe if my own hair had even more layers and was perpetually windblown? Proof: [link] Mine is better behaved on most days, lol.
But I had so much fun with her color here, I hadn't expected for it to turn out half this well, not until after a few rough drafts at least!

Working on a tablet you just need some work And it's not all bad thing that you aren't almighty and fabulous right from the start
Photoshop saves everything...
THAT IS VERY SCARYYY. Because I've never seen photos of your hair before this. You need to be in a L'oreal ad for the windblowing. "Because you're worth it~"
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pallanoph In reply to kalmanen [2010-05-05 07:24:16 +0000 UTC]
I guess you're right about that. Part of the thing with working on a tablet is it throws off my hand-eye coordination just a bit. (Seeming as how it's not great to begin with.
) So sometimes things get shifted a hair, and I only seem to notice after I've posted it!
Hahaha, yes it is! Or maybe it's not so scary, as I (like many others, I'm sure) have a tendency to reference things they know/are familiar with/represent themselves in a piece, whether consciously or not. So Tjora's mane just ended up vaguely resembling my own hair, but with a weird forelock, haha.
Me in a L'oreal ad would be more than a little frightening!!!

Thanks so very much! Normally I have a heck of a time working digitally at all, and most of my attempts at fur end up overdone and not very convincing.
This one turned out a lot better, but it still feels slow for me, hehe.
I guess we all work at different paces, right?

Hehe, quite honestly I'm not 100% sure if I know, either! I remember I blocked in most of this with that middle brown first, using the gouache brush, which is my favorite. Quite honestly, I'm not certain if I could manage as well using anything else, but I'd better try.
Much better than the solid brown she originally was, yes?

It is. It's also the name of the peninsula that makes up the country of Denmark, so I'll just be using the name as a regional reference until I can come up with a tribe name.
(Hopefully I can come up with something soon.

The fur looks different to me, a new style of detailing it maybe? I like it quite a lot, honestly. Especially the bright highlights in it - you don't need that general sheen of reflected light, almost like an extra stroke of white over it all, if you show that the fur itself is healthy and glossy in the minute detail that way. And I just love how you use many different shades for one small section of fur, adding lovely depth to the contrast between highlights and shading.
