So this idea has been in the works for some time because everytime I look for rat markings I find a load of sites that only show some of them. I have compiled 20 markings here and I know this is an incomplete list and I've tried to make them the standardized markings. If I've got something wrong or you would like me to add some other markings not included here please comment, I'd be more than happy

Also, I'm in love with my rat line art I don't use my tablet that often which means I'm amazed that I'm happy with the result. I thought I would totally screw it up with my inexperience XD.

Anway, this has become my pride and joy. I am content and have used my holidays to do at least one thing that was productive.

The markings are based on show standards so they are what is considered the perfect version of each marking but the average marking would be messier and when rats are a mix of white and colour they typically end up with splotches on the tail, it's just how it goes, lol. You're rat is probably a hooded by the sounds of it, I know mine all had splotches on the tail that weren't perfect to the show standard

Excuse me, this is hella helpful, but can american irish have a white marking that's not symetrical? My rattie has a blaze of white on its belly that's good size, but not good shape.
I thought it's just Irish, I had no idea there are some variations of it, though!

pandemoniumfire In reply to LadyOf7Sins [2014-06-03 22:56:30 +0000 UTC]

Your rattie could be a american irish or just normal irish but it is not a "correct" marking it doesn't fit a club standard. It's also hard to tell without a photograph XD

LadyOf7Sins In reply to pandemoniumfire [2014-06-08 16:07:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for help! My rattie probably just doesn't meet the standards of American Irish, but it's the most possible version.

Ulla-Andy In reply to pandemoniumfire [2012-06-21 09:26:44 +0000 UTC]

poo, well i can try and describe him, his face has a white triangle on it but its not solid colour, its like a line that goes round his head..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pandemoniumfire In reply to Ulla-Andy [2012-06-24 11:25:19 +0000 UTC]

It sounds like a broken mark, one that might have been a blaze but didn't quite make it. It's fairly common to have a marking that is similar to an official marking but has been broken or otherwise changed. After all, this is only a guide to markings that have been officially recognized.

FireFur [2011-05-17 17:36:51 +0000 UTC]

What about looking bareback, but the line is not smooth at all (light brindling around it), and white chin? And the same, but a black spot on the back? I always thought they were hooded.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pandemoniumfire In reply to FireFur [2011-05-18 06:42:53 +0000 UTC]

It's probably a hooded, cap-stripe or bareback but not the ideal version of it. These markings are derived from the official ones as judged in rat fancy organisations. It all depends on whether the stripe down the back is a stripe or a splodge.

Thankyou soo much! I would say I have a v2 in the works but I haven't worked on it for a fortnight XD. I don't know what I would do without my rats, but gerbils? I can't get them in Australia, you're soo lucky!

Wow, it's impressive that you did this! I love ref sheets and technical things (and rats of course), so this is a lot of fun to look at for me. Good thing to be your pride and joy (:
I would love to see an even longer list, though of course I appreciate the effort that this in itself so far must have taken.

Oh gawd, I want a rat. e___e But at school we're only allowed to have fish. Haha, this was very informative. XD And thanks for posting the bibliography. I just discovered the existence of siamese rats! But I haven't succeeded in convincing my mom that it's just like our siamese cat.

(Working on your commission as we speak! )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pandemoniumfire In reply to KlakKlak [2010-07-19 05:37:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've got a v2 in the making after discovering that different countries have different standards and there are even more markings than this! I've been taught by school to always include the references, (without them, I wouldn't have been able to do it!).

If you want a strong point to argue on about rats, tell you mum that the siamese cat is not as clean as the siamese rat. Rats spend most of their awake time cleaning and if the cage is kept clean, they are pratically odourless (well, my girls smell slightly of grap soda and the boys smell a little musky). Rats also like to keep their environment clean which includes storing their poos in one spot (it is so funny watching them make a poo pile XD) and their food in another spot, and also cleaning their owner who has digusting oils on them that rub of on the rats. They hate getting human oils on their fur! Point proven, rats are cleaner than cats (and shed less).

I should make a tutorial on rat behaviour with all I've witnessed XD Thankyou for the update on the commission )

KlakKlak In reply to pandemoniumfire [2010-07-19 22:55:35 +0000 UTC]

Haha. XD It sounds like rats might be cleaner than humans too. And yeah! I'd love to see what kinds of behavior you've recorded. I like reading about animals I don't have. X'D
