cool, and very informative!
in which category would you put a marten? (at least i think he's a marten, he has lighter nose and spots around the eyes, a small light spot in the middle of the forehead, and the same lighter colour around the paws, and a batman-logo shaped whitish spot on his belly, the remaining parts are mostly uniform grey, with a bit of colour variation) or is that a special category? Pic can be found here

I've did a lot of research since this sheet (working on v3) and the marten wouldn't fit into any of the categories in this sheet. It's hard to tell if you rat is a marten, the defining feature is that it has red eyes. The belly needs to be a lighter colour (all over and not just a spot) but if it is a martin then it'd be a martin-irish.

Yep though you have to be aware of those rats that look like a tortoiseshell but are actually going through a moult.

thats cool to know, thank you!...yeah this rat looked to be an adult or close to...
this was the first and only time I have seen a rat that look like it...this was some months ago.
So another random Q's are they like cats that they are mostly all female?...

Sorry for the late reply. No but the there aren't enough recorded to say if they're more likely in one gender.

As I'm very curious - what is the site that mentions the "Van" marked rat. I've never heard of it and Google isn't helping. I'm curious about the genetic code (and if you can breed true this marking).
If you could point me toward the site, it would be a great help.
Thanks so much!

I found the van on two german sites and here's the [link] directy to the van page on the better one and you can see two real examples as well! I'm not sure about the genetics they might just be a variation of dalmatian.

They look like a very scarcely marked Cap-Stripe! Thanks so much for the link. Maybe I can find the genetic code else where.

Interesting... according to this Ratty seems to have been a European Husky.
I was always a bit confused when I saw old pictures of her, because she got so much lighter over the time, that the old pictures didn't really look like her current self.

pandemoniumfire In reply to were-were-wolfy [2010-12-18 05:31:08 +0000 UTC]
She might not be (and instead molted out of her colour) but I can't tell and your guess would be better than mine. I still can't decide if one of my rats is a husky or just changing colour each time she molts XD

Yeah, it's hard to tell, but she was my first rat and she has a special place in my hard.
Sadly I had to have her euthanized because of a lung tumor.
I put one of the older pictures I had of her up for comparison.

Deffiantly a husky and a gorgeous one at that! At least you did the right thing and put her down, I've only ever did it once and it was so hard but it was for the best

My old fancy rat had colouring which I would call Himilayan (due to the cat's markings; [link] )
What would you say it is? Heres a photo of him; (on the left [link] )

pandemoniumfire In reply to tehuberkami [2010-12-15 22:51:07 +0000 UTC]
It's hard to say for sure with the lighting but it's deffiantly a himalayan or a siamese. Those two markings aren't on the sheet because I class them more as colours. Try some of the sites I listed if you want to be sure about the marking. (they are so adorabe in the picture especially the hooded cleaning the tail )
